TAVISTOCK hope to bounce back from their defeat by Plymstock when the go to Axminster.
Tavvy were unbeaten before running into Plymstock and can’t afford another loss if they want to carry on commanding top spot.
“It is a must-win game for us after last Saturday,” said skipper Shaun Daymond, who took a maiden league ton off Plymstock.
“The key is staying positive and bouncing back to winning ways.
“Axminster have a decent, all-round side.
“We have Bideford (2nd) and Ivybridge (3rd) coming up, back-to-back, so keeping the gap at the top is crucial.”
Lee Baker and Sean Cleave are missing this week, but James McGahey is back.
Axminster need a win for different reasons as they are only four two places off the drop spots after losing to Thorverton.
“I'm expecting a hard game as Tavistock aren't top of the league for no reason,” said Axminster captain Tristan Wakeley.
“When we played them last time we got bogged down whilst batting so there's lessons to take into this game.
“For what is probably the first time this season I'm able to field an XI that's the same as the previous week.”
Chasers Bideford, 17 points behind the leaders, don’t want any slip ups against visiting Shobrooke Park.
“I am looking to continue our form against Shobrooke to keep up with Tavistock before playing them next week,” said skipper James Ford.
Batsman Alex Binnington Savage comes straight in after finishing college in an otherwise unchanged team.
Plymstock, at home to Braunton, are looking to build on their win over Plymstock, set up by a Teddy Richards ton.
“It's instilled some confidence in our lads knowing we can turn over the good sides and I'm hoping it can be a springboard into some more wins for us,” said skipper James Nichols.
“Consistency is what I'm looking for so I want a complete performances from my side.
Teddy (Richards) was brilliant last week and I'm looking for other guys to step up and put in a whole team performance.
“If this clicks we will be a very dangerous side.”
Heather Knight is out and Ian Whalley is on holiday so in come Scott Mansfield and Rory Coltham who deserves his shot after making runs in the 2nd XI.
“As for braunton we owe them one as we were rubbish up there,” said Nichols. “We know they have match winners so we will need to keep improving to be where we want to be.”
Braunton are likely to be a couple of players short, including skipper Ian Roberts who is recovering from surgery.
“Ian netted on Tuesday but might need another week,” said acting captain Jon Baglow.
Braunton went down to Barnstaple last week, which dragged them into the relegation orbit.
Baglow said improvements are needed to get results that will move Braunton up the table.
“We started well last week, taking three early wickets, but then drifted in the field,” said Baglow.
“Tom Popham batted well and the two batsmen at the end took it away from us.
“We need to start winning some games quickly to try and stay out of trouble.”
BARNSTAPLE still trail Braunton by 17 points in the scrap to stay up, but skipper Steve Moore is confident they can get there.
Whether they make much inroads into the deficit at Ivybridge tomorrow remains to be seen.
“We have played some good cricket in the lasts two weeks and ave given ourselves some hope we can avoid relegation,” said Moore.
“I feel we need four wins from the last seven games.”
Availability issues mean Barton, Thomas, Roe, McEndoo and Hunt are all not available.
In come Metters, Shaun Cole and, out of retirement, Steve Wheatley.
“It is going to be a very tough game against a very good side,” said Moore.
“Ivybridge have some talented cricketers and in De Silva the best cricketer in the B Division.”
THORVERTON skipper Graham White has been checking the seaweed by the back door all week, hoping the weather doesn’t interfere with his side’s promotion push.
Thors are away to bottom side Stoke Gabriel this week and will be favourites to win and win well.
Six points for a rain-off is not what White wants against a side who have been spanked by Ivybridge (3rd) and Bideford (2nd) in the last two outings.
“I am very keen to dodge the forecasted thunder storms and get a game in,” said White.
Other than Nick Barton being away, Thors are at full strength, with keeper Harry Choules, off-spinner Jake Choules and left-arm pace bowler Gill Crouch all back in.
“There is every reason to hope that we will be able to field a near full strength X1 from this point on – something we have not be able to do all season,” said White.
