Ford positive despite 115-run defeat

BARTON are up and running in the A Division thanks to a 115-run win over visiting Bideford.

Skipper Adam Parker led the batting effort with 54 as Barton racked up 206 for six.

Will Grainger (44) and Mark Gilmour (31) chipped in.

There were some tidy spells from Bideford spinner James Ford and Josh Atkinson, who went for les than four an over.

Matt Stewart had three for 49 including Parker and Grainger, who put on 57 for the third wicket.

Bideford were all out for 91 in reply - Dan Barratt (28) the only batter to resist for long. He was in for 89 minutes until Tom Drake prised him out.

Bideford were three for six after five overs – Gilmour (3-20)  and Tom Porter doing the damge – and never really recovered.

A mini stand of 22 between Barratt and Ian Hayter (14) got Bideford up to  76 for seven.

The last four wickets went for 15 runs as Parker (2-14), Aqeel Ahmed and Shaun Needham (2-15) wrapped things up.

Barton go into the derby clash against Brixham this Saturday second in the table behind Cornwood.

Parker said it was a better win than it looked in difficult conditions for batting and much of the credit belongs to the batsmen.

“Being put in on a wet, difficult track is never easy but our batters dug in and 200-plus was a great score considering the conditions.

“We got off to a great start with the ball with our openers bowling well and getting rid of their key batters early.

“From there our bowling attack suited the conditions and we did really well to keep taking wickets consistently.

“Our job now is to remain consistent and go a difficult game next week with some confidence and belief that we can put in a strong performance.”

Bideford skipper Ford said it was a tough game to start with as he had three key men absent.

“Missing some important players didn't help, but no excuses we were outplayed by a team full of players who know what to do at this level.

“We bowled well to keep them to 206 then losing three early wickets didn’t help our chase.

“I am feeling positive though and when at full strength we will cause a few problems.”
