BARTON skipper Adam Parker has warned his team to expect something tougher this Saturday in the derby clash with Brixham.
Barton got up and running in the A Division thanks to a 115-run win over visiting Bideford last Saturday.
“With the greatest of respect to Bideford, Brixham will be a different kettle of fish,” said Parker.
“Bideford are back in the A Division this season for the first time in years – and their players have very little experience at this level.
“Brixham have players who have played at this level and higher in the past – and seem to have strengthened during the winter.
“It is going to be one of our toughest games in the first half of the season, bearing in mind we were rained off against Cornwood.”
Parker said the win over Bideford was better than it looked in difficult conditions for batting and much of the credit belongs to the batsmen.
“Being put in on a wet, difficult track is never easy but our batters dug in and 200-plus was a great score considering the conditions.
“We got off to a great start with the ball with our openers bowling well and getting rid of their key batters early.
“From there our bowling attack suited the conditions and we did really well to keep taking wickets consistently.
“Our job now is to remain consistent and go a difficult game next week with some confidence and belief that we can put in a strong performance.”
For Brixham skipper Andy Pugh a trip to Barton is a trip down Memory Lane.
He made his name there as a teenager at the start of a career that led to more than 150 appearances for Devon and England caps in the Board XI.
There will be no sentiment on the pitch though. Pugh wants to win and believes his side is well equipped to do so.
Brixham have signed South African Matt McGilvray and Aussie Stuart Edgar, both of whom have impressed Pugh so far.
“The difference between us and other sides in the division last year was often the opposition’s overseas player,” said Pugh.
I think we've a found our difference as Matt (3-5 off 10) was un-playable last Saturday at Tavistock.
“Plus, Stuart Edgar has proved he's a top class batter with a brilliant temperament.”
