B Division results - week one

TOM Baxter’s battling 51 not out wasn’t enough to save Alphington from a 61-run defeat at Ivybridge.
Ivybridge announced their arrival in the B Division with a 45-over total of 247 for eight – Jeewan de Silva slamming 117 off just 87 balls with 13 fours and two sixes.
Jake Zimmerman made 57 at the top of the order – he and deSilva totted up 82 for the third wicket – and there was a stand of 72 for the seventh wicket between Tom Lancaster (18) and deSilva at the end.
Alphas’ skipper Stuart Shaw tried seven bowlers in an attempt to get on top of the batting, with limited effect. No one took more than one wicket.
Alphington were all out for 186 in reply – a better total than looked likely when they were languishing at 86 for six.
A three-wicket burst from Kelvin Trent (3-15), aided and abetted by Pete Abraham nipping out opener Dave Hayson for 44, saw the Alphas slip fron 48 for two to 86 for six.
The three Toms – Weeks (11), Bath (18) and Baxter – at least made the scoreline respectable.

CHUDLEIGH got over a middle-order collapse to beat Stoke Gabriel by four wickets at Kate Brook.
Stoke were grateful to skipper and former Chudleigh player Josh Dowling for 65 in their total of 120 all out.
The visitors were 104 for seven after Jack Vittles (2-25) removed Dowling and capitulated soon after.
The wickets were shared around with Rob Clarke, Sean Day and debutant Jack Thomas all getting a couple.
Chudleigh found runs almost as hard to come by and were in some difficulty themselves after dipping from 69 for two to 77 for six – Dave Bolland (3-25) and Jack Tolley (2-42) doing the damage.
After Ed Foreman went for 30, it was left to Clarke (32) to see it through with Mark Solway for company.

THINGS can only get better for Barnstaple & Pilton this Saturday against visiting South Ddevon after a 136-run mauling by Tavistock.
Arron Churchill (45) and Ian Gray put on 85 for the first Tavistock wicket and with Dave Manning (66) and Shaun Cleave (25) putting on 84 for the fourth the Moorlanders had 29 for seven on the board.
There were two wickets each for B&P bowlers Henry McEndoo and Paul Schiller.
Barnstaple captain Steve Moore never thought making 298 to win was likely, and so it turned out.
George McEndoo made 61 but that was as good as it got as B&P subsided to 161 all out, Tavvy skipper Shaun Daymond took four for 28.

THORVERTON had to work every inch of the way for a 13-run win at South Devon.
Ali Fury top scored with 48 and Graham White made 48 on his arrival from Exeter in a Thorverton total of 246 all out.
Paul Fielder and Fury put on 77 for the first wicket, helped by some costly South Devon bowling, then White and new captain James Hope (33) kept the board ticking over.
One player disappointed to miss out was Thors’ vice- captain Dave Baldock, dismissed for three by his former team-mates.
South Devon gave it everything they had chasing down the runs led by a fine half-century from Paul Hooper (50), backed up by Henry Burningham’s 44 and 28 at the top of the order from veteran Brian Allen.
Jonty Parsons (25), ex-Thor George Burningham (33) and Richard Beaumont (31) kept the score ticking along, although Fury (2-34) and Will Denford (3-36) slowed them at times.
The target was 14 to win with four wickets left and nine balls to go when Beaumont got out.
South Devon lost three wickets in the final over – two of them to run-outs – as Thorverton held on to win.
Thorverton are at home to Lewdown this Saturday.

SHOBROOKE Park captain Justin Dollow will want a bit more grit from his front end batsmen when Chudleigh visit this Saturday.
The season opened with a disappointing seven-wicket defeat by Lewdown, a side eager to improve on last season’s near miss in the promotion race.
Shobrooke got into early difficulties against Charlie Hughes (3-52) and Phil Yeo (4-17) that reduced them to 18 for four after seven overs.
Richard Pyle (45) and Chris Simpson (48) stopped the rot but an all-out total of 150 never looked enough. It wasn’t.
A stand of 87 between Harry Geering (31) and Marco Marius (57no) broke the back of the chase as Lewdown won at a canter with 20 overs to go.
