B Division: Barton three short

B DIVISION

BARTON – away to Alphington – are keen to get over their narrow defeat at Chudleigh as quickly as possible.

“We need to forget about Chudleigh and get out there and play to the best of our ability,” said skipper Adam Parker

“Last week we played some poor shots at bad times and bowled a lot of bad balls so that is something that needs addressing.”

Barton have yet to name a side, but their former Torquay trio of Andy Hele, Andy McVeigh and Harry Moores are all missing.

Alphington make two changes Tom Murray is  not available so in comes Andy Ross a batsman picked up through contacts at the University.

The other change is tactical Anthony Shepherd a recent arrival from Bangor University has been moved down to the 2nd Xi allowing him to have a bowl. In comes Lee Rowe a promising young off spinner batsman.

“We had a good if a little unexpected win last week when Tavistock were so close only three wickets down, but Barton are obviously a good side and are looking to go up at the first attempt so we have to be at our best in all areas of the game to get a positive result,” said Alphas’ skipper Paul James.

THORVETON travel to Dartington & Totnes without run-getter Gareth Hess, who shattered a finger in the win at Axminster last time out.

Andrew Codling is on holiday so Thors will bring in Nick Barton and Harry Choules.

Just like last season everyone is beating everyone else in the B Division this term.

Thors skipper Ali Fury wants promotion and knows consistency is the key.

“I am looking to continue where we left off last week,” said Fury.

“Judging by the results last week, it could be a really open league this year.

“Our priority is to concentrate on our game and not worry about everyone else.”

CHUDLEIGH, at home to Barnstaple, welcome back veteran left-hander Lance Ames for Neil White.

Ames made a match-winning 50 in the opening day victory over Alphingon but Chudleigh had to beat Barton without him last Saturday.

“Obviously we have had a good start to the season and will be looking to continue that against a dangerous Barnstaple team,” said Chudleigh captain Jon Martin.

“If we play the game we want to there is no reason why we can’t pick up another good points haul.”

TAVISTOCK are going to be without a clutch of regulars for the derby date with Lewdown –the first time the two teams have met in the Devon League.

Nick Goodchild and Mark Webber are up from the second team as Dave Manning is getting married and Andy Gauler is at the service.

Skipper Shaun Daymond, who is still on the injured list, said” We are struggling for numbers at the moment and just looking to get through the next couple of weeks then get out full side back and move on from there.”

Lewdown’s defeat by Hatherleigh last Saturday was their first in a league match since 2009 – and it hurt.

“I am looking to bounce back after last week’s poor performance,” said lewdown skipper Charlie Hughes.

“I remain confident but perhaps that was the kick up backside we needed.”

Nick Hayden replaces Carl Weeks in an otherwise unchanged team.
