Golding shows quality in Bovey win

BOVEY Tracey finally got off the mark for the season when they beat visiting Exeter by 26 runs.

Matt Golding (pictured) showed the benefits of spending the winter playing in Australia with a top score of 94 not out in Bovey’s total of 191 for nine.

Bovey limped to 17 for three under pressure from Joe Barrs (4-26) and George Greenway (2-28), then further slumped to 51 for five after Jon Tipper (2-36) struck twice in the same over.

Golding and Nathan Roberts (46) hauled Bovey around with a stand of 103 for the sixth wicket, it ended when the returning Barrs poled Roberts.

Exeter made a similarly woeful start – they were 59 for five after a duffing up from Nathan Roberts (3-18) and Ryan Bougourd (2-37) – but showed signs of recovery while Billy Searle (33) and Nathan Prouse (53) put on 43 for the sixth wicket.

Malcolm Lake (2-22) nipped out Searle, then Mark Gribble (3-30) and Roberts cleared out the rest, finishing with Prowse on 164.

Bovey captain Andy Fairbairn said Golding’s innings was key to victory.

“Matt Golding’s innings was the difference between the two teams,” said Fairbairn.

“On a day when no other batter could time the ball or get into any rhythm, Golding batted majestically.

“He is a very talented young player and is a very popular member of the club.

“It won't be the last significant innings he plays for Bovey this year that's for sure.

“Nathan's innings was also critical and helped us put a decent total on the board.”

On the bowling and fielding, Fairbairn added: “It was the best yet from us this year and I hope this can be the catalyst for our season.

“All the bowlers chipped in with wickets or maidens at the right time and were back up by dedicated fielding.

“We are looking forward to taking some momentum up to North Devon next week.”

Exeter skipper Miles Lenygon wasn’t too critical of his side, despite the result.

“I hope we are learning the intensity and controlled aggression we displayed in our innings is how we should play when it's 50 overs a side,” said Lenygon.

The boys all bowled well, Joe barrs and Merrick Steward especially.

“As a group we know there are areas we have to improve on, but considering the stop-start type of game it was a very complete performance from us.”
