HAS there ever been a spell of Devon League bowling quite like Caleb Gaylard’s for Ipplepen in the 220-run demolition job on Kingsbridge?
Pens made a handy 243 for six against the relegation worriers – Jack Lewis hitting a top score of 73 – then Gaylard took eight wickets for five runs in four overs as Kingsbridge were dismissed for 23. Gaylard’s haul included five wickets in five balls.
Joe Abbot removed Kings opener Jack Westlake in the first over, then Kiwi left-armer Gaylard took eight in a row.
“Caleb bowled James Ellis in the third over and after four overs Kingsbridge were 18 for two,” said skipper Keith Wakeham.
“Caleb took wickets with the last two balls of over five, was unlucky to miss his hat trick with the first ball of over seven, but soon made up with it by taking a wicket with each of the remaining five balls - four bowled and one lbw.
“Joe completed the last rites by dismissing shell-shocked Will Matthewman, the until then surviving opener.
“Caleb’s breathtaking control and accuracy of late in-swing was the best spell of bowling I have ever witnessed in a Pens shirt

Earlier. Lewis and Sam deFriend (34) had put on 91 for Pens’ second wicket after Matt Nichols went cheaply.
Abbott (32) and Seb Powell (26) kept the board ticking over prior to Jonny Ranjit (34no) and Gaylard (12) adding 37 in the final three overs.
CLINTON Lewis couldn’t put a foot wrong for Clyst Hydon in their 64-run win over Alphington.
Lewis blazed away to make 103 in Clyst Hydon’s total of 231 for seven, sharing a stand of 163 for the fifth wicket with Graham Trude (72).
Alphington were 121 for five on the chase and reasonably well placed with Dave Haysom in and out for 33 and Dinesh Raheja on his way to an unbeaten 67.
Raheja suffered from a lack of support as no one made double figures after the fifth wicket went down as Alphington slid to 167 all out.
There were two wickets each for Dhanuja Haturusingha and Chris Holmes, but man of the match Lewis took four for 27.
Clyst wind up the season with the short trip to Ottery this Saturday.
OTTERY defeated Chagford by three wickets to go fifth in the table at the expense of Dartington & Totnes.
Ottery have not finished higher than sixth since arriving in the C Division in 2012 so fifth would be a definite improvement on the last two campaigns.
Chagford, heading for a bottom-four finish, were kept to 178 for eight in their 45 overs.
Most of the runs came in a stand of 51 between Divan Marais (45) and Jake Griffiths (30), although Ottery captain Lewis Townsend’s Isca hockey pal Jon Wright did chip in with 26.
There were two wickets each for Rob Crabbe and Billy Reed.
Ottery got started wel enough – Read (31) and Crabbe (36) among the runs, then slowed up as Will Lammonby (3-54) and Craig Penberthy (2-37) got among them.
The slide stopped with an unbroken stand of 61 between Sam Lynch (46no) and Matt Reed (26no) that ended any doubts about the outcome.
Delighted Ottery skipper Townsend said: “The guys bowled really well to keep Chagford to 178, which we always felt was very getable.
“We did make hard work of getting there, but we've got a long batting line up so it was good to see the lower order get us over the line.”
SOUTH Devon are heading a for a title decider against Ipplepen this Saturday after a remarkable win over Dartington & Totnes.
The odds on a South Devon win didn’t look great as they slumped to six for three with Will Gornall (2-15) among the wickets. Ryan Stevenson (0-27) kept it tight.
A stand of 167 for the forth wicket between Sean Day (88) and Mike Smith (71) turned the game on its head and with Ali Wight chipping in with 21 not out South Devon reached 236 for six.
Dartington were all out for 175 in reply, Dave Knowles (4-39) and Jon Martin (2-14) doing the damage with the ball.
James Howrihane (40) top scored for D&T and there were supporting knocks from Liam Bligh (22) and Jono Colgate (35). They were the leading scorers getting the visitors to 80 for one. After that wickets fell regularly.
There has barely been the thickness of a cigarette paper between South Devon and Ipplepen all season – a situation not helped by the first meeting between the sides being rained off without a ball bowled.
With a game to go the two frontrunners are both promoted and dead level at the top on 286 points.
The title decider is at Ipplepen’s Moor Lane ground this Saturday.
SEAUMUS McKenna clubbed a whirlwind 161 as Shaldon ended their long wait for a win in emphatic style with a nine-wicket romp over Plymouth CS&R.
The last time Shaldon won a game was on June 9 when they beat Ottery St Mary, so another was long overdue.
Fortunately for Shaldon they were not sucked into the relegation mire as Kingsbridge had an equally poor run and CS&R were chucked down there after a hefty points deduction.
Civil probably felt their total of 233 for six was reasonable – and most days it would have been.
There were stands if 83 between Chris Sanders (48) and Dan Sanders (51), and another of 56 between Sanders and Alan Smith (67).
On a belting batting track, McKenna’s two for 26 with the ball was a decent return.
What happened next was pure carnage as McKenna assaulted the Civil bowling without mercy.
McKenna reached his 50 off 46 balls and his century in another 38 – and far from easing up he accelerated.
There were two instances of hitting bowlers for four sixes in an over as the scoreline mounted.
McKenna blasted 13 sixes and 14 fours. He had 50 of the first 58 on the board and reached his ton in a running tally of 117.
Fellow opener Jay Tuffnell made an unbeaten 57, managing to get enough of the strike to deny McKenna a likely double ton.
When McKenna got out at 218 for one, a few blows from James Fulner completed the match.
