IPPLEPEN ensured there were no arguments about who should be top dog in the C Division by routing South Devon by 86 runs in the title decider.
The two teams were level on points at the top of the table going into the final round of fixtures so it really was winner takes all.
Pens made a hefty 275 for two in their 45 overs with Jack Lewis stroking an undefeated 120.
Matt Nichols was in and out for 15 to Mike Smith, which brought Tom Dyer out to join Lewis.
Lewis and Dyer put on 214 for the second wicket, which was only 10 runs short of the 224-run record set by Johnny Hurford and Joel Seward for Axminster against Clyst St George last year.
In the overall list of second-wicket stands for the division, Lewis and Dyer ousted Stoke Gabriel pair Jim Attwood and Steve Tolley (200 v Kingsbridge, 2001) from second place.
Along the way some damage was dished out to the South Devon bowlers. Neil Hancock’s second three overs went for 32 – including a Dyer six into the copse at the top of the ground.
After Dyer went for 93, Sam Wakeham put bat to ball for a rapid 23, which included two last-over sixes off Jonny Martin.
Pens added 130 in the final 11 overs, which ultimately pushed the game beyond South Devon.
South Devon gave as good as they got for a while with Hancock (67) pushing them on to 106 for two.
Steve Bowden (3-37) had Hancock well caught by Joe Abbott and from then on the game swung emphatically Pens’ way.
Martin made 29 and Jonty Parsons 30, but Bowden, Nichols (2-20), Keith Wakeham (2-34) and Caleb Gaylard (2-20) worked through the middle and lower order to dismiss South Devon for 189.
TEN-man Alphington cruised to an eight-wicket win over Shaldon Optimists in their final game of the season.
James Fulner (63) and Seamus McKenna (34) took Shaldon to a promising 120 for two, but hopes of further progress were halted by Stuart Shaw and Mike Shepherd.
Shaw took four for 24 and Shepherd three for 28 as Shaldon subsided to 168 all out.
Alphngton were 25 for one when Dave Haysom went and 60 for two when they lost Andy Shepherd.
Mike Shepherd (54no) and Dinesh Rajesh (49no) saw Alphington the rest of the way without mishap.
Alphington finished third in the final table, 32 points behind second-placed South Devon, but on second-half form put down a marker for next season.
The Alphas won eight out of nine and took 164 points from 198 on offer, beating South Devon and champions Ipplepen along the way.
Shaw has been handicapped by patchy availability from key players this season and knows that has to improve next term.
CHAGFORD went down by four wickets to Dartington & Totnes in a low-scoring affair at Foxhole.
And not even a six-wicket show from veteran left-armer Derek Lammonby could stave off defeat for the Moorlanders.
Once Stuart Lord was dismissed for 24, Chagford nosedived to 56 for six then 81 all out.
James Howrihane (5-9) did much of the damage, backed up by Will Gornall (2-29).
Totnes started well enough through Angus Wilson (30) then ran into trouble as Lammonby took six for 34.
Jono Colgate (20no) and skipper Ryan Stevenson were the not-out batsmen who saw D&T home.
Chagford finished fourth from bottom last year and haven’t budged in the final table for 2014.
CLYST Hydon will be disappointed not to challenge for promotion next season after finishing the current campaign in fourth thanks to a 38-run win over Ottery.
Hydon finished 41 points behind promoted runners-up South Devon, a side they defeated in the second half of the season, and can only wonder at what might have been?
The weather did Hydon no favours in May – three of their first four games were called off – and they went into game five 37 points behind the second-placed club.
Among the rain-offs was a meeting with eventual champions Ipplepen, which would have been a chance to make up ground on them had Hydon won.
“After the start of the season with three rain offs and two losses in our first five games, it was very satisfying to finish so well and end up where I think we deserved to,” said captain Ian Sutton.
“No team beat us twice, which is always good, and we did the double over some good sides.
“All in all a very enjoyable season!”
Sri Lankan start man Dhanuja Haturusingha top scored for Hydon with 60 in a total of 258 for six.,
Along the way Haturusingha shared in stands of 78 with GrahamTrude and 60 with Clinton Lewis (43).
Other contributions came from skipper Sutton (30) and Sinthuran Thevaraj (41no).
Ottery found wicket-taking hard, although there were two each for Joe Birch, James Faulkener and Rob Crabbe.
Otter were all out for 220 in reply and will be a little disappointed not to have pushed on from 128 for three.
Mickey Wilkinson (28) and Crabbe (48) got Ottery into a useful position before the slide started.
Faulkener made 38 in a stand of 44 for the ninth wicket, but it was too late by then.
Clyst shared the wickets around with two each for Lewis, Oz Bezley, Sean Devine and James Billington.
“It was a really nice way to finish the season,” said skipper Sutton.
“A good game played in the right spirit and everyone chipped in with runs and wickets.”
KINGSBRIDGE’S relegation season ended badly in a 98-run defeat by Plymouth CS&R.
Civil are the only side below Kingsbridge in the final table, but looked anything but relegation fodder as they compiled 268 for seven – James Sharpe top scoring on 105 not out.
Will Dory (3-62) and Neil Peach (2-34) were the pick of the Kingsbridge bowlers.
Kingsbridge were all out for 170 in reply – Bhanu deSilva making 46 and James Rowewarne 35 not out.
Man of the match Sharpe took three for 15 and Chris Sanders took two for 18 as Town were bowled out for 178 in reply.
