Sidmouth win McKinleyWhite T20 final

Sidmouth won the McKinley White Twenty20 Cup for the third time in five years, after winning a close final against reigning champions Exmouth on the County Ground.

Exmouth posted 129 for 3 off their 20 overs led by skipper Richard Baggs who made 74 not out despite batting with a runner for most of his innings after pulling a muscle.

The pick of Sidmouth’s bowlers was Zac Bess with miserly figures of 1 for 16 from four overs.

The total always looked a little short of par, but Exmouth’s bowling and out cricket was excellent led by Matt Tarry (2-26) and they had Sidmouth on the ropes at 11 for three.

Fine and sensible knocks by Anthony Griffiths (50no) and Liam Lewis (56 no) saw them home.

In the semi-finals, Exmouth beat Exeter who were profligate in the field, dropping Richard Arnold (59) several times. With a great knock of 45 from Andrew Buzza, Exmouth reached 153 for six.

Exeter were well on course in reply at 50 for none from the first five overs with openers Tom Viljoen (36) and Callum Still (22) leading the way.

Exmouth’s spinners pulled things back, in particular Jamie Tapper (1-13), and with excellent fielding and catching they kept Exeter seven runs short.

Sidmouth got the final by overcoming Alphington after registering a substantial 172 batting first with 56 from Lewis and a quickfire 25 from Nick Gingell.

Ben Newcombe (3-32) posted the best figures for the bowling side.

Alphington then gave Sidmouth a real scare as openers Ben Morris (40) and Dave Haysom (43) hit 68 for the first wicket off nine overs.

Steady bowling by Miles Dalton (3-18) and Will Murray (1-28) kept Alphington in check and restricted them to 148 for seven

Lewis won the Player of the Day award.
