Devon win opening LV Championship clash

After winning the toss, Devon asked their visitors from Netherlands to bat first on a pitch that initially looked like it would offer some early assistance to the bowling side. Devon’s opening pair of Jodie Dibble and Rebecca Donohue kept the Dutch opening batswomen on their toes and after staying patient and bowling good lines and lengths got their rewards as both openers were dismissed with the score on 41, both to good catches, in the gully from Lottie Miles and Rosalie Birch at point, respectively. There followed a stand of 45 between the experienced Helmien Ramaldo and ex Kent player Clare Crewsdon before both fell before the score reached 100 to leave the Netherlands 96-4. The introduction of left arm spinners Hazelle Garton (3-19) and Lydia Harris (3-29) proved pivotal as the Netherlands lost wickets on a regular basis and it was left to N Stalenburg to hit a belligerent 43 from the same number of balls to get the visitors up to 149 before Jodie Dibble claimed the final wicket, clean bowling Marisa Kornet. An excellent bowling and fielding performance from Devon, holding all of their catches and with good intensity throughout.

The Devon reply got off to a sticky start as first Amara Carr was run out for a single after facing 1 ball and Rosalie Birch was stumped off a wide for a couple to leave the hosts 15-2. A stand of 102 between Jodie Dibble (52) and Aylish Cranstone (66no) put Devon into a commanding position and despite losing Miles for a duck, Cranstone was joined by Lydia Harris as Devon completed a 6 wicket victory to claim maximum points from their opening fixture. Cranstone was particularly impressive as she played the anchor role to skipper Dibble but then took the lead to accelerate her innings and take Devon to an opening win. Next up for Devon is Staffordshire on 27th May at Sidmouth.
