Exmouth can only blame themselves says Baggs

EXMOUTH skipper Richard Baggs said his side only had themselves to blame for the 120-run defeat by Exeter that cost them top spot in the Premier Division.

Andy Curtis made a patient 52, and Matt Hicks a very brisk 50 not out, as Exeter totted up 225 for nine in 45 overs.

Exmouth were dismissed for 105 in reply with Tom Viljoen (4-24) finishing them off after George Greenway – two for seven against his old club – and Merryck Steward (2-9) had done the groundwork.

Defeat drops Exmouth down to second behind Sidmouth, whose win at Plymouth put them top of the table by 16 points..

Baggs had no complaints, saying: “Exeter out played us and totally deserved to win.

“We bowled 23 wides and then batted very poorly, by far our worst performance and not good enough.

“This Saturday’s game against Sandford is now even bigger for us.”

Exeter started brightly – they were 41 without loss thanks to Curtis and Will Steward (27) – had a little wobble prompted by Ollie Dawe (1-12) and Andrew Buzza (2-39) then went from 65 for three to 150 for four.

Curtis found a willng running mate in Sean Morris in a stand of 85 that ended when Morris was bowled by Gary Chappell (3-54).

Billy Searle went cheaply to Chappell then Hicks was run-out by Buzza as Exeter slowed to 156 for six.

Enter Hicks, whose 50 off 28 balls in the last eight overs upped the tempo at just the right time.

Exeter paceaman Joe Barrs removed Exmouth opener Sandy Allen in the third over, then Greenway (left) struck in successive overs to remove Bob Dawson and David Lye.

Seb Benton made 21, but only Trevor Anning (14) and Baggs (10) reached double figures as Exmouth lost wickets regularly.

For Lenygon, another Exmouth old boy, it was a result to savour.

“We were patient with the bat and knew with that total if we got a couple of wickets early we could put their middle order under pressure,” said Lenygon.

“All the bowlers were very disciplined and we were very lively in the field.”
