THE first promotion issue of the season was settled last Saturday as Kingskerswell clinched the F Division title during the truncated game against Cheriton Fitzpaine.
The game was rained off with the Cherries 122 for seven – and the nine points Kerswell earned ensured they could not be caught at the top of the table by either Chelston or Cullompton, who can both finish second.
Kerswell have had some up-and-down times in recent seasons, which included losing their 2nd XI before the start of the current campaign.
Last summer the 2nd XI pulled out of the C Division due to internal wrangling within the club and the intention had been to start all over again at the bottom.
Nigel Butt, the club’s secretary, said the rancour that soured last season was now a thing of the past and Kerswell are looking forward with confidence.
“This year everybody has pulled together on and off the field - and finally the lads have achieved some reward for their effort and ability,” said Butt.
“Every single member of the team has made a crucial contribution at one stage or another during the season and to have reached the last two games having won every game we have played, is an unbelievable achievement.
“The club is particularly grateful to all those who have put in an enormous amount of work behind the scenes.
“All have provided not only a solid base for which the club has been able to achieve success this season, but which created an enormously enjoyable atmosphere in which to play cricket.
“If you are having fun, and enjoy the company of your team-mates, you have a much better chance of producing your best cricket individually and as a team.
“Roll on next season as I see no reason why we shouldn’t be up there amongst the promotion candidates in the E Division.”
