SIDMOUTH got the brake on against Bovey Tracey to win a close game by five runs.
Teenager Harvey Sargent (79) and Matt Cooke (56) were the leading scorers for Sidmouth in a total of 215 for three.
Somerset staffer Adam Dibble made 32 and Central Districts all-rounder Andy Mathieson 28 not out.
Although Jordan Willoughby and Peter Bradley both made half centuries, Bovey were in six an over territory and above with 15 overs to go.
Sixteen to win off the last over from Will Murray proved too many, despite the best efforts of Charlie Sheen (38no), and Bovey finished short on 210 for six.
Murray said he wasn’t sure Sidmouth had enough runs on the board until late in the Bovey reply.
“We got stuck in the middle and I felt we probably needed 230-240,” said Murray.
“Harvey batted well in what was only his second game in the first team and at 16 looks a fine prospect for the future.
“Bovey got a good start then we hauled them back in the middle.
“Although the accelerated towards the end, we bowled well and they had too much to do.”
For Bovey captain Peter Bradley it was one that got away – and that wasn’t sour grapes on his part.
“I think we should have won, but it just shows winning is a habit, even with a much-changed team like Sidmouth’s is this year,” said Bradley.
“They have just snatched the last four games away from us, when we were in a strong winning position in each game.
“Both teams had players unavailable, but I won't make that excuse.
“We need to learn from these type of games as a team and individuals and push on.”
Cooke played an uncharacteristic anchorman role for Sidmouth, making 56 of the first 90 on the board off 97 balls.
Sargent batted 166 minutes for his 79, which came off 125 balls and included six boundaries.
Sargent’s stand of 84 with Dibble was the best of the innings.
Pick of the bowlers for Bovey on his debut was Sheen, the ex-Surrey Championship all-rounder, whose ten overs cost just 29 overs.
Willoughby and Bradley put on 75 for the second wicket as Bovey went off in pursuit.
Three wickets went in a hurry – Willoughby, Matt Golding and Ben Ayres and with 13 overs to go Bovey needed a hundred to win.
Bradley (61) did his best and Sheen chipped in to good effect with 38 off 31 balls.
But Liam Lewis (3-46) took wickets at the right times and Bovey came up short.
