Ball biffs a century as Lewdown pile up runs

SANDFORD skipper Jamie Pamer would prefer to draw a veil over the 95-run defeat by Lewdown in the first meeting between the clubs.
Opener Dave Ball made a hundred as Lewdown negotiated tidy spells from Ryan Glass (4-32) and Brian Leach (2-23) to make 209 all out.
Sandford were all out for 114 in reply – and most of those came from the blade of Zimbabwean newcomer Prince Maseuare, who made 82 not out on his debut.
Sandford have a derby date against Bradninch at Creedy Park this Saturday and Palmer doesn’t want a repeat.
“Lewdown was a performance we need to move on from very quickly,” said Palmer.
“I felt we did okay in the field and 209 was very much chaseable, but the batting performance minus prince was nothing short of embarrassing.
“This is only one performance and we know we are better than this.
“The next two weeks we are probably playing the two strongest teams (Bradnnch and Cornwood) in our division.
“I am looking for us to go into those games with a more aggressive and intense style of cricket.
“On the plus side, Prince looks a very good batsman.”
Ball batted from start to finish for Lewdown, facing 139 balls and hitting nine fours and two sixes.
Along the way he shared in a stand of 58 with skipper Harry Geering.
“We just went with the goal of batting our overs which we did for the first time this year,” said Geering.
“Dave Ball batted superbly and youngster Leon Horn, who was promoted up the order, showed the potential he has and built a good partnership with Ball.
Sandford stumbled to seven for three as Johan Wessells got into them on his way to figures of five for 22.
Talon Burns took three for 20 as Sandford crumbled. Take out 23 extras and there wasn’t a lot from the rest.
“We dropped Maseuare on 0 and for a second that looked costly, but the bowlers stuck to their task and went through the other end well,” said Lewdown captain Geering.
Palmer won’t want to hear it, but Lewdown opposite number Geering claimed later he had an under-strength team.
Geering added: “It was a very good result for us, one we needed.
“Last week we felt we played well but where just missing a batsman against a good Cornwood side, so we knew we weren't far away from a win.
“The next few weeks, like the last few are going to be tough with a lot of players still missing for a few weeks.
“As long as we can carry on doing what we are doing - picking up points – I am going to be confident for second part of the season when I have everyone back.”
