Ottery make it three in a row

OTTERY St Mary have a top-of-the-table clash with Uplyme this Saturday as the season campaign starts to hot up.

Ottery made it three in the row when they beat Shaldon by 23 runs and are 13 points clear at the top.

Uplyme are third on 43 points, having been top themselves before losing to Alphington last time out.

Shaldon were dismissed for 225 chasing 249 to win.

Karl Blackburn made a bright and breezy 123 for the Riversiders, but it wasn’t enough.

Pick of the bowlers for Ottery were Jody Clements (3-52) and Will Harrison.

Ottery shared the runs around when they batted with Sam Lynch (61) leading the way. The two Billies – Read (40) and Rudolf (31) were in the runs, as was Ed Fowler (28),

“Given the conditions 248 was a good score,” said Ottery skipper Lewis Townsend.

“From the position we were in I would have like another 20-25 runs, but we were loosing wickets too regularly.

“Sam Lynch and Ed Fowler put on 90-odd for the seventh wicket, which really made the difference.

“We bowled with good discipline again, which was very pleasing.

“Although Shaldon were up with the rate for long periods, we stuck at it well and got our rewards.”

Mark Couch, the Shaldon skipper, said his side has to bat their overs to win games.

“We were always up around the asking rate, but overs were the problem,” said Couch.

“Ottery bowled us out four overs early when we were on course runs wise but had no wickets left.

“Karl batted brilliantly, but it needed someone to stay with him and get 30 or 40 to win the game. No one did.

Jamie Day made 22 and Andrew Espley 18, which underlined Couch’s point.
