Another nail-biter for Chudleigh

CHUDLEIGH skipper Ed Foreman won’t want another nail-biter when his men visit Ipplepen.

So far this season the Kate Brook outfit have won by two wickets and seven runs.

The seven-run win over Braunton as a tense affair which Foreman said Chudleigh did well to win.

“I felt we showed great fight in the game,” said Foreman.

“We didn't get things all our own way, but battled hard to get 180 on the board after being 80-6 - and fought back hard with the ball after not getting off to a good start.

“I am very pleased with the boys and the graft they put in to dig out the result.”

Foreman opened up with 40 and bits and pieces from Dan Britcliffe (18) and Matt Heather (13) got the total up to 71 for two.

A mini-collapse to 78 for six had Chudleigh reeling – Mark Johnson (2-38) among the wickets – but the tail wagged to pretty good effect.

Sean Newland made 38 and his stand of 42 with Mark Solway (22) got Chudleigh going again.

Paul Horne’s 19 not out at the end helped Chudleigh get to 177 all out in the last of their 45 overs.

Rob Collier (14)  Alfie Huxtable (24) and Dave Creswell (14) got Braunton up to 70 for one in the 16th over and the picture looked rosy at that stage.

Spin proved Braunton’s undoing as Faisal Khaliq (2-26) and Rob Clarke (2-14) got into the middle order as 70 for one became 84 for five when Huxtable’s run-out was factored in.

Callum Mitchell’s patient 40 kept Braunton in the picture as they got down to the final over with last pair Alex Hodges and Johnson in residence and eight needed to win.

Hugh Stronge needed five balls to winkle out Hodges to win the game.

Captain Jon Baglow said Braunton got into a good position at Chudleigh, but lacked the experience to close out the game.

“We got in some good positions chasing a gettable total of 177, but gave a couple of wickets away at key times.

‘We haven't won many games in recent years and I think if we had a bit more confidence and a good run if results we would have won that game.

“Callum Mitchell got is in a good position with 40, but we just couldn't get over the line.”
