EXETER skipper Miles Lenygon said the 36-run win over Paignton is a step in the right direction and nothing more.
The city side did well to reach 237 all out in the last oft their 50 overs – Sean Morris top scoring on 54.
Half centuries from Dan Wolf and Ollie Higgs had Paignton on course at 158 for four with 15 overs to go.
But the Seasiders lower order struggled against veteran seamer Jon Tippper, whose five-wicket haul turned the game.
Tipper took five for 34 as Paignton subsided to 201 all out.
Said Lenygon: “We were a couple of batters light so to make 235 was a good effort.
We bowled poorly with the new ball and put down four chances.
Fortunately,, J J Debenham came on and tied up one end and the other bowlers picked up some rhythm.
“Tipper’s second spell was very tight and forced errors.
“There is still lots to work on though.”
Opener Zac Bes was in and out cheaply for Exeter – the first of four scalps for George Yates – but for the next 40 overs the County Ground side made steady progress.
Tom Richardson (44) shared a stand of 43 with Lenygon, who was Yates’ second victim.
Morris and Will Steward (45) added 87 for the fourth wicket in 14 overs.
Morris, Steward and Hardwick all went while Exeter dipped from 153 for three for 184 for six – Wolf (2-24) doing the damage.
George Greenway clipped 32 off 23 balls at the end as Exeter used up their wickets in hand.
Paignton lost stand-in opener Stephen George and Noah Wright by the end of the third over, but there were runs around the corner.
Higgs (59) and Wolf (55) clocked up 118 for the third wicket as Paignton hit back.
One of them needed to bat through for a Paignton win but Will Hardwick (2-42) bagged them both
Once Higgs went at 158 for five, Paignton ran into Tipper trouble and Exeter had the game won with nearly four overs to go.
Paignton captain George Benton said he was disappointed to get in a winning position and lose the game.
He added: It's difficult with such a young team as experience is something we needed on Saturday.
“I feel we are nearly where we want to be and wth just a couple more tweaks and improvements we will be back on winning ways.”
Overseas player Tyler Sylvester has retuned home to South Africa after suffering a broken finger in the win over Plymouth.
Benton said Paignton are looking for a replacement, but won’t be rushed into a distress signing.
“The younger players are really stepping up,” said Benton.
Dan Wolf was brilliant against Exeter and showed how mature his game is.
“Harry Ward, making his first team debut at 16, shows that youth are coming through at Paignton.”
