Heathcoat architects of own misfortune says skipper

HEATHCOAT captain Sam Smith said the team only had themselves to blame for the six-wicket defeat by Torquay in the Premier Division top-of-the-table clash.

Heathcoat, who were second in the table behind Torquay, were bowled out for 145 with more than four overs to go.

Brad Barnes with 43 was Heathcoat’s top scorer with Dinesh Raheja next best on 20.

Ryan Stevenson (4-20) battered the top of the order, the Max Saller spun through most of the rest on the way to a five-for-33 haul.

Matt Thompson’s unbeaten 63 off 89 balls ensured there were no slips by Torquay.

Smith said it wasn’t complicated to work out what went wrong.

“We batted poorly on a good track in great conditions and kept loosing wickets in clumps,” said Smith.

“With the exception of Brad, no one ever looked comfortable.

Credit to Torquay they looked a good unit and Stevenson bowled a quality spell up top and really won them the game.

“We bowled well and at one point could have put a bit more pressure on them chasing.

“However, 145 was never enough and we will need to start a fresh next week.”

“The message to the boys is move on, train harder and look forward to Exmouth away, always a testing fixture.”

Barnes and Raheja got Heathcoat up to 98 for four after they had been 40 for three.

Raheja’s demise started a slide that saw six wickets go for 23 runs.

Only Jack Menheneott made a double-figure score as Heathcoat collapsed in a heap.

Mitch Pugh fell early to Paul Elliot when Torquay batted, and skipper Justin Yau went lbw to Jack Dart on 45.

Thompson and Sach Galhenage (23) broke the back of the chase, leaving Waller (15) and Tim Piper (8no) to partner Thompson over the line.

Torquay skipper Justin Yau said the bowling department set the game up for Torquay.

“We bowled exceptionally well and made it very difficult for Heathcoat,” said Yau.

“It was a good toss to lose and Ryan Stevenson was absolutely outstanding up top again.

“Ryan is a real threat and a superb strike bowler and ripping out the top four demonstrated that.

“Max Waller showed why he is a class above and bowled with great control. He is such a clever bowler, which makes him so dangerous against anyone he plays.

“There were great contributions from Ian, Sach Galhenage and Matt Petherbridge, which kept things tight.

“Then Matt Thompson did what he did best. It was a superb knock and he guided us through it well.

“We knew he was in good form after seeing him swat away so many wasps and flies in training.”
