Allen strokes unbeaten century

SANDY Allen carried his bat for an unbeaten century as Premier leaders Exmouth dispatched lowly Torquay by 164 runs.

Allen, who got his runs the hard way with just nine boundaries, was the anchorman Exmouth’s total of 278 for four was built around.

The Devon keeper-batter shared stands of 53 with Bob Dawsonb (20), 40 with David Lye (13), 49 with Seb Benton (26) and 114 with skipper Richard Baggs.

Baggs made a brisk 62 off 63 balls with seven fours and two sixes.

Only spinner Max Waller (2-35) and Fahad Iqbal (0-32) went for less than five an over when they bowled.

Torquay needed a solid start to be competitive – and 51 for four in the 20th over wasn’t it!

The damage was done by Ian Bishop on his Exmouth debut – the former Somerset, Surrey and Devon seamer took three for 27 – who nipped out Waller, Iqbal and Justin Yau.

Matt Thompson made a patient 31 in an hour and half, but only Tom Marrow (19) and Josh Hunt (13no) offered anything in the way of support.

Ollie Dawe (2-19) and Gary Chappell (3-13) got stuck into the middle and lower order as Torquay subsided to 114 all out.

Torquay skipper Justin Yau offered no excuses on behalf of his side, saying: “We were very poor in all areas.

“We didn't set the tempo up top and bowled really poorly which set the tone for the game.

“Then we didn't take responsibility when we batted.”

Exmouth entertain Exeter this Saturday. Torquay have a basement tussle with Sandford they cannot afford to lose.
