Under 13's v Gloucestershire Under 13's
Gloucestershire ended up being our first county fixture of the summer following a rain out week away at Cornwall.
Playing at the recently new venue of Filham Park, Gloucestershire elected to bat after winning the toss. A decision that Devon were happy with considering they felt the pitch may favour bowling first. Within a very short space of time Gloucestershire's decision appeared to be less then prudent as they were reduced to 13 for 5 with some excellent swing and seam bowling from Jonty Walliker (3 for 18) and James Onley-Gregson (1 for 24). Onley-Gregson also produced an outstanding run out with a diving stop on the boundary and bullet throw to Sam Taylor who quickly whipped the bails off!
At 49 for 8 it looked like an early tea, but a spirited fight back from Gloucestershire's number 8 batsman, 52 not out, helped them reach 117 before they lost their final wicket. All 6 Devon bowlers bowled. Luke Jefferson picked up 3 for 28, including a wicket with his first delivery in County cricket!
117 didn't ever look like enough on a good pitch even though Devon lost their first wicket with only 1 on the board. Partnerships between Max Mejner (15), James Degg (24) and Ben Sapiecha (46) broke the back of the innings. 20 not out from Sam Carpenter and a boundary from Isaac Windley finished of the match with exactly 10 overs to spare. Sapiecha took the game away from the opposition with some good hard hitting and then cleverly hitting singles into gaps.
A good winning start to the 2014 summer. Wiltshire are our next opponents on June 8th at Chagford CC.
