This week it was the turn of the U15s to take part in the Chance to Compete Indoor School’s County Finals. Following the same format as the U13s (see report here) there was again 2 pools of round robin games in the morning session.
Honiton Community College started strongly in their pool with a 20 run win over Bideford College. South Dartmoor also started well comfortably defeating Kingsbridge. Bideford bounced back from their initial loss putting South Dartmoor to the sword by 30 runs, whilst Honiton racked up the highest score of the group stages, taking Kingsbridge for 86 en route to another 3 points. Kingsbridge pulled out their strongest performance in their last game pushing Bideford close, but ultimately falling short again. Another thriller saw South Dartmoor fall just 4 runs short in chasing down Honiton’s 69.
In the other group, Sidmouth College started with a 9 run victory over Okehampton College. Hele’s School – fresh from the trouble of a broken down minibus – were caught cold by Okehampton, then suffered similarly against Sidmouth.
After lunch, South Dartmoor and Hele’s played off for 5th and 6th position – the former coming out on top. The semi-finals were close affairs. Honiton beat Okehampton by a single run, whilst Bideford snatched defeat from the jaws of victory against Sidmouth.
Bideford passed the hundred mark in batting first in the 3rd/4th place play off. Those of us spectating thought the game was up, but faced with this daunting challenge, Okehampton kept to their task and amazingly knocked the runs off with 3 balls of their 8 overs to spare. Meanwhile, in the all East Devon final, Honiton hit their highest score of the day in taking the Sidmouth attack for 89 runs. In reply, Sidmouth found themselves on 77 with an over to go. A tight start to the over saw nerves begin to jangle, but 3s off the 3rd 4th and 5th deliveries meant a single was required from the last ball of the tournament to secure victory. It was duly tucked away for another 3 to secure Sidmouth a nailbiting win and the crown of Devon Champions.
