ABBOTSKERSWELL went all the way to the final of the Devon Indoor competition but were unable to prise the title away from holders Cornwood.
The Two Mile Oak side fielded three sides in the South Devon Indoor Cricket League, where their 1stXI won Division One to reach the Devon play-offs.
After a thrilling semi-final victory on fewer wickets lost against Clyst Hydon, Abbots came up against reigning champions Cornwood in the final.
Abbots bowled and fielded superbly restricting the Premier Division side to 97 in their 12 overs .
Skipper Ben Warren top scored with 23 not out for the Corns with Hugo Whitlock the meanest of the Abbots’ bowlers, sending down three overs for just eight runs
Despite a valiant effort by Abbots and in particular skipper Charlie Garrett (31) the champions showed why they excel in this format by dismissing the challengers for 57 with an over and a half to go to retain their title.
The commitment shown by Abbots in the final typified the whole club’s effort through the winter as many colts have thoroughly enjoyed and thrived in the chance to play competitive cricket.
Abbots are now looking to carry that momentum forward into the outdoor season where they will once again be fielding three sides in the Francis Clark Devon League.
Abbots had a challenging year in 2013, but there were positives, including the performances of many colts in all the senior sides showing promise for the future.
The club won the fair play award last season, which was collected at the league’s annual meeting by Guy Harrison-Roberts on behalf of captain Richard Acton.
Weekly ndoor nets started on Tuesday this week at St Cuthbert Mayne School in Torquay for seniors (7.30pm) with the colts starting at 6pm where an impressive new bowling machine is being used to help develop skills.
