LEWDOWN slipped to a 48-run defeat in a high-scoring thriller at Abbotskerswell.
Abbots were invited to bat first and raced to 317 for five in their 50 overs.
Steve Bowman was the man of the moment for Abbots with 98 off 107 balls with 16 fours and two sixes.
Bowman put on 154 for the third wicket with skipper Dickie Acton (61) before Tallan Burns (3-33) broke the stand.
Acton and Callum Stanley (49) kept the momentum going by adding another 43.
And when Acton was bowled by Burns, Stanley wrung another 56 out of the final nine overs with Jake DeAraugo at the other end.
Other than Burns there wasn’t much in the Lewdown bowling to report.
Lewdown had a good go at getting the runs and had Marco Marais stayed in a bit longer might just have got them.
Dave Ball (42) and Mark Jordan (28) gave Lewdown an 81-run start, then Marais plundered 39 off 26 balls to reach 131 for two.
Marais, Jordan and Antonio Weeks all went between 131 for two and 140 for four – Toby Codd and Matt Beasant doing the damage - which meant some rebuilding.
Skipper Harry Geering struck 64 off 58 balls and only when he was seventh out at 238 was the game up.
Acton (3-38) got into the tail as Lewdown were dismissed for 269.
For Abbots it was their third win in four starts and one with plenty of added value for skipper Acton.
“It was great for some of the guys to step up when we needed it,” said Acton.
“Steve Bowman and myself put on a great partnership and Callum Stanley hit a quick 49 at the end to see us well over the 300 mark.
“We knew it would still be tough to defend on a good track against their powerful batting line-up.
“Our bowlers did not start well and we gave them too many freebies.
"However, Charlie Garratt's spell of 2-31 was game changing, he removed Ball first and then got the huge wicket of Marais.
“Toby Codd supported him well and deserved his two wickets.
“It was great to record another win and even better that the batsmen found form.”
