Codd joins Brockman's most exclusive club

ABBOTSKERSWELL’S Toby Codd (pictured) joined one of cricket’s most exclusive clubs by hitting a century for Abbotskerswell in their Brockman Cup win over Torquay.

Since the cup was first contested in 1933 – Old Manorians defeated Inland Revenue in the inaugural final – only four players have scored Brockman Cup hundreds.

Ray Haydock was the first in 1978, for Torquay against Ipplepen, followed ten years later by Dave Smith for St Marychurch also against Ipplepen.

Twenty years went by before Brixham’s Chris Sleep took a ton off Babbacombe in a semi-final.

And two years later Stoke Gabriel’s Ben Robinson made exactly 100, also against Babbacombe.

Now Codd’s name can be added to the list after he opened up for Abbots against Torquay and slammed 105.

“Apart from being dropped in the deep when he was on 92, Toby didn’t offer a chance,” said Paul Mitchell, who was batting with Codd at the time.

“It was a great knock for a lad who has only just turned 16.”

Next best with 37 was Aron Owen, who has just rejoined Abbot from South Devon.

Torquay, who only had 10 men at the start and finished with nine after John Mather limped off injured, were all out for 41.

Owen Flower (15) had the only double figure score.

Pick of the bowlers with three for eight was Matt Beassant

Abbotskerswell 176-6 (T Codd 105, A Owen 37; A Francis 2-28), Torquay 41 (M Beassant 3-8, R Pratrap 2-2, K Rich 2-2). Abbotskerswell bt Torquay by 135 runs.
