ABBOTSKERSWELL
are bracing themselves for an Aussie invasion at Two Mile Oak on July 3.
For ex-1st
XI captain Josh Dowling is getting married soon and 40 friends and family
from Melbourne will be joining in the celebrations. Some of them are already
here playing in the Devon League for other clubs.
Inevitably,
a cricket challenge has been issued by the Aussie invaders – taken up by
Abbots.
It won’t
quite be playing for the Ashes, but a lively T20 game is expected when
Dowling’s All Australian XI take on Abbotskerswell’s England XI.
“The game is
supposed to be a friendly however the boys back home in Melbourne are keen to
make a good impression and believe they will be too strong on the night,”
predicted Dowling.
Among the
players lined up are Ben Morris (Aphington) along with his brother Cody who
dominated for Ivybridge a few years back, Nathan Caton Robertson (Dartington
& Totnes), Mark Dowling, Rob Birnie, Luke Dinon and Sean Langenberg
(all ex-Stoke Gabriel) and two
more Dowlings – cousins Mark and Josh.
“It should
be a decent side and I think we will have a few others,” said Dowling.
Abbots are
taking the game so seriously that veteran batsman Steve Short has been coaxed
out of retirement to play and captain the side.
Short has
got wind of Dowling’s pre-match drum beating and intends to come out fighting
on the night.
“I heard he
was trying to get Cameron White for the game, but Somerset already have a match
so we won’t have to worry about him,” said Short.
“I am
looking to bring in some guest players, such as Ben Passenger (Torquay), Tom
Carter (South Devon) and Jeremy Christophers (Chagford) to strengthen our side.
“And if
there are any English qualified South Africans out there – if England can do
it, so can we – I would love to hear from them.”
The game starts at 6pm with a barbecue, music and
drinks.
