Overall team of the year were Stoodley Knowle School girls’ cricket team from Torquay, who progressed from Kwik Cricket soft ball matches to become the National Indoor Lady Taverners’ Champions.
The convent girls represented Devon at Bristol University, coming first to become South and West Regional County Champions, and went on to beat more than 480 schools, becoming champions at the Lords Indoor Cricket Centre National Finals.
The team has benefited hugely from close links with Torquay Cricket Club and coaching from Ian Western.
The team were acknowledged as Team of the Year, an award sponsored by the Sunday Independent.
Plympton’s Alex Carr who coached the Devon U15s Girls Cricket Squad to national success, winning the ECB National U15s title, took home a runner-up spot in the coach of the year (youth) category on the night.
Carr has been a leading figure in the set up and organisation of the Inter District Girls competition, bridging the gap between club cricket and county junior cricket.
He has a fantastic rapport with his team, leading them unbeaten through 2011 to the national title, his calm manner supported the team despite being nervously near to the London riots during the finals festival.
Active Devon chief executive is Matt Evans (pictured, right) who, earlier in his career, was Devon cricket’s first development manager.
Evans was among the speakers at the awards night. He told the winners and their guests how proud he was of the strength of community sport in Devon.
“I know that London 2012 will provide many inspirational moments, but what is just as important to me is the inspiration we should all draw from the dedication and achievements of the nominees and finalists in this year’s awards,” said Evans.
“It tells me the sporting community in Devon is continuing to punch above its weight and it reassures me that by working together we can achieve our aim of everyone in Devon active for life.”
The awards were presented to the finalists and winners by Gorgs Geikie and Keryn Seal. Gorgs, known in the media as ‘Britain’s Lara Croft’ is the British number one Lady Pistol Shooter.
Keryn, self-confessed Arsenal fan is a member of England’s Blind Football Squad. Both of them have their aims pinned on a London 2012 Olympic Medal and the audience had the opportunity to hear about the pairs Olympic and Paralympic dreams during an interview with Mark Tyler during the evenings proceedings.Devon CCC official George Gribble (left) was at the awards night in his capacity as Teignbridge District Council's sports portfolio holder for recreation and leisure.
