Acton takes over as skipper at Abbots
ABBOTSKERSWELL have lined up a prestige Twenty20 game against Somerset during the season ahead.

Somerset have been regular visitors to Two Mile Oak over the past few year with Andy Caddick and Marcus Trescothick bringing teams down for benefit games.

This year’s beneficiary is Arul Suppiah, a player who knows the Devon cricket scene well having played for Exmouth and Seaton.

Suppiah, (pictured) who studied business management at the University of Exeter before becoming a professional cricketer, played for Devon in the early days of his career.

And his knock of 240 against Dorset at Bournemouth remains the second-best score ever made by a Devon batsman.

Abbots welcome the Cidermen to Two Mile Oak on Wednesday, June 12. With the likes of Marcus Trescothick, Craig Kieswetter and Jos Buttler among the potential visiting players, and many off-the-field activities, it’s sure to be a memorable day for the club.

Over the winter it has been all change at Abbots with Richard Acton taking over as 1stXI captain, Paul Mitchell as 2ndXI captain and Karl Beasant in charge of the 3rd XI.

Mitchell, who is also head of cricket, has overseen the signings of Tom Durman from Ashburton, Charlie Garrett from the Warwickshire leagues and Ryan Williams as overseas player from Australia to strengthen the 1st team as they look to push on within the A Division.

The colts have benefited from the club’s coaching system and many are now playing in the senior teams, including 14-year-old spinner Toby Codd (left) who has been selected for the U15 Devon Cricket Development Tour of South Africa.

Abbots run sides at all age groups in the South Devon Youth League and have youngsters in a several of Devon’s age-group sides.

Abbots’ policy is to support the array of qualified coaches within the club and ensure on-going coach education and qualification is encouraged.

“There is a fantastic coach education program in this county and it is imperative the club support the already qualified coaches and those that want to be involved in coaching,” said Mitchell.

“We want every junior and senior player to be comfortable and confident in the coaching the club provide and education will benefit all.”

It is expected that club stalwart Steve Short will head up the coaching team for 2013.

Indoor nets start at 6pm on Tuesday, February at St Cuthbert Mayne School, Torquay. Players of any age and ability are welcome. Contact Paul Mitchell on 07778 017326 or visit www.abbotskerswellcc.co.uk for further details.
