EXETER are one win and away from promotion to the Premier Division – not that skipper Jon Tiipper regards getting it as a formality. For the opposition on the County Ground are Braunton, who beat Exeter twice last season.
As Braunton are not out of relegation danger, Tipper is just a little wary.
“We have a great opportunity to not only get promoted but win the division, but are under no illusions of how tough that will be against Braunton.
“They were a bogey side for us last year and are scrapping to stay up this year so we know they won't give us anything.”
PLYMSTOCK visit Brixham with relegation fears almost, at the back of their minds.
A loosing draw against high-flying Paignton last week, that was very nearly a win, saw Plymstock open up a 40-point gap on Shobrooke Park in the second relegation spot with three games to go.
A disastrous run of results and a massive loss in the last game of the season is the only way Plymstock could end up back in the B Division next year.
Not that captain Dave Orchard is taking his foot off the pedal for the remainder of the season.
“Although we're practically there, we're not going to let up, and make sure we secure the points we need to confirm safety.:
Plymstock go to Brixham looking to play in the same manner that had Paignton chewing their nails and confirm their status in the division next year.
A few players are missing, with Hal kerton on holiday and Rory Coltham playing hockey. Callum Cload returns to the side after injury and Liam Savage returns.
The final position will be decided closer to the game.
Brixham captain Mark Orchard – Plymstock opposite number Dave is is cousin - is happy with his side’s position, which he describes as ‘lovely’.
“We have nothing to lose and the teams above us have everything,” he said.
“Our target is three wins. If we do that then hopefully we'll put pressure on Cornwood and Paignton.
“If they drop points then who knows what can happen? Lots to still gain with no pressure.”
CORNWOOD – away to Abbotskerswell – have to keep winning if they want the second promotion spot.
The Corns are currently second, but the five point advantage over Paignton in third place could vanish in a trice.
As Cornwood and Paignton both have to play Exeter on the run-in, at least it is a level playing field.
“With three games to go we have to continue on the path we have set,” said captain Craig Harris.
“Two wins from the next two and we may find ourselves in a situation where we can push for the finish line on the last game (Exeter).
“We are in the best situation, especially considering the other teams around us have to play each other too.
“I've said before that this is the time of the season to be putting on a charge so now is the time to make it happen.
“However there is no point in looking too far ahead if we don't do the job this week. We have to warn against complacency and try to keep focused on getting the result we want.”
Cornwood finished closer to the bottom than the top of the table last season, Their detractors will say that was due to losing fast bowler Aizaz Cheema for long periods of the season.
Current pro Mohammad Salman’s availability has been far better, however Harris said there was more to it than just one player.
“Our batting has continued to develop week on week and we feel confident as a team that we can perform and adapt to varying match situations,” said Harris.
“Our bowling and fielding has been consistent and the standards the guys have set in the past few weeks have been fantastic.
“It’s great to see each of the players want to play and play for each other, and that competitiveness breads success.”
PAIGNTON have to pull their socks up against Plympton after surrendering second place in a draw at Plymstock last time out.
“Last week’s performance was poor and we didn't look like a side chasing promotion,” claimed captain Andy Kingdon.
“We need to bat time, bowl straight, field with some energy, and that way we will push for the second promotion spot all the way.
“The boys have worked so hard all season we need just one last push now.
“We know we need to win at least two, if not all three, of the remaining games.
Plympton have a tall order on their hands as six first-choice players will be missing at Paignton.
Craig Donohue and Rich Skinner can't travel because of work commitments so are playing in the 2nd XI.
Alex Carr is away with Devon Ladies. Matt Gregory and Pavi Mawalage both have injuries and will be out for the rest of the season.
In come Ross Farrer, Harry Kandampully, Jamie Pfieffer, Tim George and Todd Rossouw.
Tom Richards comes in for the work tied Jeremy Williams
Skipper Andy Walker has already conceded in the promotion race, but that doesn’t mean any slacking.
“To be honest with us near enough out the running we are looking to enjoy some good games of cricket.
“Paignton will still be looking to get back to the Premier so Saturday will be a tough game and we won't be giving them an easy ride.”
THE pressure is on Shobrooke Park to beat visiting South Devon in the battle of the strugglers.
South Devon are as good as down and Shobrooke look the most likely team to go with them as they are 24 points adrift of safety.
“We have to win at least two of the last three to even have a chance of staying up other results elsewhere also have to go in our favour,” said skipper Justin Dollow.
“”We can’t afford any mistakes or bad weather either so its a tall order but with the fixtures we have left it is still very possible.”
South Devon, 44 points adrift, welcome back hard-hitting batter Henry Burningham.
