Alphington entitled to fancy chances

ALPHINGTON have a perfect right to count themselves among the promotion candidates in the C Division West this season having shown their credentials last season.

Ipplepen and South Devon ran away with it at the top of the table with Alphington 32 points behind South Devon in third place.

However, Alphington proved they could live with the best by beating Ipplepen and South Devon during the season.

Alphington have strengthened subtly during the winter and are aiming for the top spot and automatic promotion.

“The games we lost last year were mostly because the opposition had a good overseas player,” said captain Stuart Shaw.

“In Ashley Green from Cape Town we have a better overseas player this year.

“The squad is stronger than last year and we would be looking to be right up there at the end of the season.”

Shaw’s aim is to win it rather than finish second and go into the new promotion play-offs.

Green is a medium-quick bowler who will bat at six or seven.

Among the other new faces are Neil Murrin, who has spent most of his adult career with Budleigh Salterton, having started out with Countess Wear as a youngster.

Murrin has been 1st XI captain at Budleigh and even in his 50s was a turn-to player in times of crisis.

“Neil wants to play first team cricket and as the chances for that are limited at Budleigh he has come to us,” said Shaw.

“We have signed him as an opening batsman and I expect him to score a lot of runs for us.”

Back from a career break is batter Ian McDonald. The only departure is batsman Mike Shepherd, who has left the area.

Alphington are away to Feniton in their first fixture.
