SOMERSET will be back in Westward Ho! again this season on Monday 15th July led this time by Arul Suppiah who has been granted a benefit year by the Club.
It is anticipated the Twenty20 match to be played in the evening will again attract a large support from cricket followers in North Devon.
It is five years since Marcus Trescothick brought his Somerset side to play Bideford in Westward Ho! in support of his benefit year.
Many will remember the large crowd that enjoyed a thoroughly entertaining match in spite of the typically wet English weather!
Suppiah is well known in Devon having studied at the University of Exeter and playing for Seaton and Exmouth.
He also turned out for Devon for two seasons in Minor Counties Competitions and his 240 against Dorset at Bournemouth remains the second-highest score in the county club’s history.
Only Nick Folland, who made 249 against Oxfordshire at Torquay, has made a better score.
Suppiah will be sharing his benefit proceeds with the Children’s Hospice South West based in Fremington. Trescothick did the same.
Bideford chairman Kevin Fishleigh said 'I am delighted that Arul and his benefit committee have invited Bideford to host the match, this is a great accolade for the club in bringing Somerset back again to Westward Ho!'
Further details of the match will be published in the next few weeks.
Jim Lowe, Bideford’s Sponsorship Secretary, would like to hear from local companies and individuals who would like to help sponsor the match. He can be contacted on Bideford 451193.
The club’s pre-season indoor nets start soon and colts’ winter training starts in February. For more information please look at www.bidefordcc.co.uk
