Baglow calls it a day as Braunton skipper

BRAUNTON will have a new captain this summer after Jon Baglow announced his intention to stand down after four years in the job.

Baglow, who rejoined Braunton in 2008 after a couple of years by the seaside at Torquay, took the Kelseymen back into the Premier Division in 2009 but they went back down again the following summer.

Long-serving Ian Roberts (pictured) will take over the captaincy for 2013 and the good news for him is that Baglow will still be around.

However, with Harry Booker departing to Exeter, uncertainty over the future of batter Jas Kalsi and the likelihood that off-spinning all-rounder Andy Paddison has retired, it could be a testing season for the new man in charge.

Explaining his reasons for standing aside, Baglow said: ““Last year I was doing so much, trying to get teams together in the week that by the time Saturday came I had had enough and wasn't enjoying playing at all.

Over the last couple of years my work has allowed me to do bits and pieces during the week as I do a lot of driving. Now that has changed and it was taking up all of my personal time.”

Baglow said while there might be tricky times in the next few seasons, he is optimistic about Braunton’s long term future.

“From a playing point of view, we have some decent kids at the club, but they are probably a couple years off regular 1st XI places,” said Baglow.

“In five years I would be happy to settle into the side and try to bring all the youngsters on, but at the moment I am still very competitive and want to push myself to play at the best level I am able to.

“I am not sure this is the case for enough of the current players.”
