Trescothick saddles up for hospice charity

GENERALLY more used to wielding a cricket bat than donning a pair of cycling shorts, first class cricket legend Marcus Trescothick will later this year be taking to the saddle in support of Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW), writes Eric Cole

With one CHSW fundraising cycle already under his belt, this latest challenge – sponsored by Clydesdale Bank – will have Marcus riding from Bristol to St Austell over five days, from Monday 26th to Friday 30th September. Each day will feature a lunchtime stop at a local school or college where Marcus will share some experiences from his illustrious career as well as passing on some tips of the game to the pupils. Marcus will also be stopping off at each of the three CHSW hospices in the region on the way down from Bristol to Cornwall. Throughout the ride he is hoping to be joined by some well-known faces and in addition there is the chance for supporters to sign up and ride with him for a day.

Marcus said: "I first got to know Children's Hospice South West back in 2008 and have tried to support them as much as possible since then.

"Being the father of two very active young daughters myself, I wanted to try and help other less fortunate children if I possibly could."
The main sponsor of the event is Clydesdale Bank, and we are most grateful to them for their support. Just to make sure that Marcus completes the whole ride, Clydesdale Bank are sending their Brands and Sponsorship manager Steven Hunt along to ride the whole way with him.
We would also like to express our grateful thanks to many other businesses who have given their support to the event, including the following : Ashcourt Rowan Plc, Old Mill Accountants and Financial Planners, Sporting Vision, Eurocams Ltd., Westaways Sausages, Six Cycles, Somerset County Sports, Exmoor Ales, Redback Cricket and Paul Jewels.
If you are unable to join Marcus on the cycle ride itself, you can still sponsor him. Please see our fundraising page at http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/team/MarcusTrescothick August, and if we are oversubscribed for any of the days, we shall decide the allocation of places by ballot.
"I am completely in awe at the wonderful work that all involved with CHSW do to support life-limited children and their families and it has become a cause very close to my heart.
“Last year I joined in with a few friends for a day on a fund raising cycle ride for the Charity, ending with a visit to the children's hospice in North Devon. This year we are going to make it into a week-long event, cycling across the region from Bristol down to Cornwall.
"I am looking forward to meeting lots of different people right across the region throughout the week, and will hopefully be able to help a little in increasing people's awareness of Children's Hospice South West and what they do.
"However, most of all I am looking forward to meeting the families, children and staff when we visit all three Children's Hospices in Somerset, Devon and Cornwall on our way. They are the real stars and I hope that you will join me in helping to raise some much needed funds to support this wonderful cause."
Dates of the ride and the daily stages are as follows :Monday 26th September : Bristol to Taunton.Tuesday 27th September : Taunton to Barnstaple.Wednesday 28th September : Barnstaple to Exeter.Thursday 29th September : Exeter to Plymouth.Friday 30th September : Plymouth to St. Austell. We shall be covering around 60/65 miles per day on average, starting around 9.30am. Allowing for a lunch-time stop of around 90 minutes, we would expect to finish each day around 4.30pm.
There will be a limited number of places available each day for members of the public to join Marcus and friends on the ride. If you would like to join us, please email Marcus at Bangersbikeride@gmail.com or telephone event coordinator Eric Cole on 01626-334965 or 07712-227809, stating on which of the five days you would be interested in riding. We shall then be able to send you full details and an application form so you can decide whether you wish to sign up to ride.
