Exeter sign Somerset keeper-batsman Barrow

SOMERSET’S Alex Barrow could be turning out for Exeter in the Devon Premier Division this season – unless he is in the first team at Taunton.

Barrow, an old schoolmate of Exeter skipper Miles Lenygon, toyed with the idea of joining Exeter last term.

The 22 year-old keeper-batsman decided to stay wit Bath in the West of England Premier League for one more season, but now feels the time is right for a change.

The only problem for Exeter is knowing how much they will see of Barrow, who as been understudy to Craig Kieswetter for the past couple of seasons.

Kieswetter is unlikely to play much if at all this season due to an eye injury and Barrow is first in line to replace him.

“If Alex does become the first choice then we won’t see much of him,” said Lenygon.

“There are batches of weeks during the season when there is no county cricket while the T20 is going on.

“Alex hasn’t featured in the T20 cricket at all in the first team, but if he is first choice keeper that might change.

“I am sure he will play some games for us and I would expect him to make a contribution when he does.”

Lenygon has also signed University of Exeter paceman Tom Barton, who is staying on for another year to complete a masters degree.

Barton will be a straight swap for Joe Barrs, who opened the bowling for the first half of last season while in his final year at university.

Gone for good from last year are early-order batsman Andrew Curtis, all-rounder Neal Prouse and Prince Harry lookalike Matt Hicks

Curtis and Prouse have finished their university studies and gone travelling for a year.

Hicks, who starred in a US reality dating show posing as Prince Harry, has returned from New York and is working in Bristol.

Lenygon hasn’t ruled out other signings as the season approaches, but says the club isn’t bringing in an overseas player this year.

“With a new pavilion to pay for we have other things to concentrate on, however a South African keeper-batsman who is already in the country may well play for us from July onwards,” said Lenygon.
