Barton pay tribute to old boys in Memorial Cup match

A BARTON line up from the late 1960. Among those who will be remembered at the inaugural Memorial Cup game are (pictured) Arnie Calland (first left), Malcolm Buck (second left), Peter Cassells (seventh from left) and Bernard Pugh (ninth from left). Also pictured are Ken Hoadley, Bob Cornish, Dave Morgan, Trevor Jones, Richard Southcombe, Ted Davenport and Tim Price

THE waistlines may be thicker and the hair thinner in places, but that won't stop the Barton Legends digging out the bats tomorrow.

The Legends XI are playing the Barton 1st XI at Cricketfield Road in the first meeting for the Memorial Cup.

The cup has been put up as an annual way of getting the Barton old boys together, and to remember former team-mates who are no longer around.

'We have lost quite a few of the older old boys over the past few years - Peter Cassells, Bernie Pugh and Roy Horswell for example - and the match will remember them and their contribution to the club,' said Legends' player Gary Spencer.

'As well as the cup there will be a player of the match award and a champagne moment award.

'We are hoping to see lots of old faces on the ground, watching us old 'uns showing the youngsters a thing or two.'

Among the Legends committed to playing are Jim Parker, Spencer, Andy Pugh (pictured), Darren Cowley, Martin Powell, Dave Cadwallader, Shaun Jarman, Peter Lucketti, Aqeel Ahmed and Mike Lievesley.

Ahmed, Barton's former professional, is travelling down from his home in South Wales to play.

Big-hitter Darren Cowley - always a favourite with Barton supporters in his heyday - is coming from Bournemouth to play.
