B Division news - Barum blood the youngsters

BARNSTAPLE are giving youth a chance in their game away at Axminster.

Twelve-year-old Jack Moore – the son of skipper Steve – has been handed his 1st XI debut. Jack is pictured below.

Moore junior has been winning player-of-the-year awards for Devon age group sides for the past two seasons and it was only a question of time before he graduated to the adult game.

County squad members can get into 1st XIs a year early.

Also in is Charlie Holm, a 15-year-old batter, who will be making his debut.

George McEndoo and Chris Brigden, the former Braunton 2nd XI captain, come into the side.

Lee Cole, Paul Schiller and James Thomas are all ruled out.

Axminster are unchanged but need to improve on their defeat at Tavistock last time out.

“We need our batters to click into gear and start backing up the bowling,” said skipper Tristan Wakeley.

IVYBRIDGE will be without skipper Gareth Andrews against Thorverton tomorrow, and probably for a bit longer.

Andrews is sideline with a back injury and expects to miss next Saturday’s date with Tavistock as well.

Andrews, Des Soloman and Chris Greenhouse are all absent. In come Harry Solomon, Kevin Jacobs and Charlie Horwood.

SHOBROOKE Park skipper Phil Anning threatened changes after the defeat by Bideford and has been as good as is word for the meeting with Plymstock.

Three players have been dropped - James Goodman, James Bevan and Ben Trenaman  - and Pete Turner isn’t available.

Dan Pyle comes in to open the batting for Turner.  Andrew Codling comes in to bat three.

Overseas Nick Prell our is back after illness last week and Matt Blakney steps up from the seconds.

“Looking for the same with the ball and our fielding, but a massive improvement with our batting as I have changed the order. It’s those players’ changes to hold onto those positions.

Plymstock skipper James Nichols has been reflecting on the defeat at Braunton last time out and looking for reasons and solutions.

“We didn't score enough runs,” observed Nichols.

“Credit to Braunton - they bowled good areas and didn't bowl much loose stuff early on - but too many poor shots were played which meant we lost wickets in clusters and couldn't put a partnership together...

“Dave Orchard and Seb Jordan batted sensibly and cleverly to get us up to 170, which was about 40 short but it was defendable....

In the field we started well and had them twi for 20 thanks to good bowling from dean fulco, we then took our foot off and they built a couple of partnerships.

“The batsmen hit well and got quite a bit of luck which was aided by the odd dropped catch or misfield, which you can't afford when defending a low-ish score.

“Bowling wise I think we were good. George Barnicott and Dave bowled well in the middle and if we cut out our four balls we will take team wickets through scoreboard pressure. This week we must improve .

“I don't know that much about, Shobrooke. They lost their last game too, so it will be a tough match with both teams looking to get back on track.

This week Morgan Parkinson and Liam Savage miss out and in come Josh Hocken and veteran Rob Baker.

BIDEFORD entertain Tavistock in a game between two promotion hopefuls.

Bideford, who hope to see Aussie Josh Roach on Monday, go with the side that won at Shobrooke Park.

Tavistock, who quelled Axminster, lose batter Ian Gray and bowler James McGahey.

The Stephens brothers – Jamie and Josh – come in.

“Bideford look to be a decent side,” said Tavvy skipper Shaun Daymond.

“If we play like we did last week we stand a good chance of getting the points.

We have played well so far this season with nowhere near our strongest side, so I hope we can dig in and carry on playing the way we are.”

Elsewhere, Stoke Gabriel are at home to Braunton.
