B DIVISIONBARTON’S promotion campaign in the B Division really hots up this Saturday when the got to Hatherleigh.
Adam Parker’s side went back to the top of the table last time out by beating Alphington by 122 runs.
Chudleigh, who were top., dropped down to third after losing at Barnstaple.
And newly installed in second place at Hatherleigh, who were seven wicket winners at lowly Axminster to stay a point behind Barton.
Skipper Parker (83) and Harry Moore (63) got Barton off to a 90-run start and there was no let up for Alphington as Andy McVeigh (20) and Rashmi Jinan (20) topped up the total to 282 for seven.
Alvin Pollard had three for 63 and Stuart Shaw a respectable two for 24.
Alphington were sent off by Dave Haysom (72) and Ben Morris (41) who were the main contributors to a running total of 156 for five. Then it all went wrong.
Five wickets fell for four runs with Damon Calland (3-7) taking the last one as Alphington were al out for 160.
Man of the match by a distance was Parker, who had five Alphas’ wickets for 43 runs.
“It was a brilliant result for us which ends a superb week for the club after winning the Pro-Direct T20 and Brockman Cup,” said Parker
“To set a target of 282 was brilliant and shows that we are learning to build innings and play shots at the right time.
“We had a scare with Alphington getting off to a flyer, but showed some good fight to get back in the game bowl them out.
“The challenge now is to create some distance between us and second, we will be looking for another strong performance against Hatherleigh.”
Chudleigh skipper Jon Martin was down in the dumps after his side took a five-wicket defeat at Barnstaple & Pilton.
Steve Moore (4-13) and Jack Popham (4-34) did most of the damage as Chudleigh went from 119 for five to 146 all out. Moore’s figures of 13-8-13-4 strangled Chudleigh.
Take out 41 extras and Mark Solway’s 24 didn’t leave a lot from the rest of the batting.
Danny Donovan (20) and Lee Cole (27) laid the foundations for the chase, which Brady Saunders (33no) topped off.
Martin took three for 34 as Barum won with four overs to go.
Chudleigh need to bounce back against Axminster this Saturday to avoid slipping too far behind.
Looking back, Martin said: “it so wasn't easy to bat as there was moisture about but we didn't bat well enough and finished 20-30 runs shy of what we were looking for.
“We failed to pick up easy singles against a very defensive field.
“After tea the pitch seemed to lose all life and even though it still wasn't easy to play shots on taking wickets was a problem.
“Barnstaple batted sensibly and got and got to the target with two overs to spare.
“All In all not a great day with both Barton and Hatherleigh winning, but we will pick ourselves up for Axminster.
Dave Baldock hit an unbeaten 81 as Thorverton crushed Dartington & Totnes by eight wickets to keep their promotion hopes alive.
South Devon’s loss is definitely Thorverton’s gain as new signing Baldock has been in form all season.
Dartington were held to 188 for eight in 46 overs - Kalon Veale (62) and Will Gornall (52) making the bulk of them in a stand of 78 for the second wicket.
Nick Barton (4-48) and Ben Slaverio (3-26) were the leading Thorverton bowlers.
James Hope was an early casualty when Thors batted, but Paul Fielder (65) and Baldock notched 165 for the second wicket to kill the game as a contest.
Andrew Codling (11no) was in at the end when victory was clinched.
D&T are at home to Lewdown this Saturday.
Hatherleigh are in good shape for the top-of-the-table clash with Axminster this Saturday following a seven-wicket win over bottom side Axminster.
Ryan Waker (87) and Marc Jenkins (37) got Axminster to a hopeful 145 for three before the wheels fell off!
The next six wickets fell for nine runs – mostly to Nick Rogers (6-33) – with five baters making nothing at all.
Hugh Romans (46) gave Hatherleigh a start, them Gareth Tidball (46) and Simon Gillespie (29no) finished things off.
Tavistock had their revenge for an early season defeat by Lewdown… but only just.
The hard work seemed to have been done by Sean Cleave (4-47) and Shaun Daymond (2-21) as Lewdown were dismissed for 116. Having been 96 for four, Lewdown skipper Charlie Hughes wasn’t impressed.
Tavistock almost made the same sort of hash-up themselves as they were 53 for five in reply with Hughes (3-7) and Rob Mutch (2-26) among the wickets.
Dave Manning batted through for an unbeaten 70 and from 101 for six onwards bits and pieces got Tavvy over the line with one wicket in hand.
Seven batters didn’t manage a run between them, which will worry skipper Daymond, who was there at the end with Manning.
