B Division: Thors have player problems

THORVERTON skipper Ali Fury may have to miss a friend's wedding to make sure of getting a competitive side out against Barnstaple & Pilton tomorrow.

The Thors are too close to the danger area for comfort as second-bottom Chagford are only 18 points behind.

As Thorverton still have to play Chagford and bottom side Clyst St George before the race is won, the capacity for things to turn sour clearly exists.

Fury's selection plans are all over the place right now and the team probably won't be finalised until tomorrow morning.

Matt Weeks comes in to replace Gareth Hess, who is missing until the final game against Clyst. Ben Lyne retains his place as George Greed can't play again this season and James Hope is doubtful.

"I am supposed to be at a wedding, but may have to stay if James can't play because of the lack of players," said Fury. "We are in an awkward position above the bottom two with five games left and both to play. We need to treat each game like a cup final."

Chudleigh captain Jon Martin says the pressure is on to beat South Devon in the top-of-the-table clash at Kate Brook.

It's been a three-way fight for a while at the top of the division, where Plymstock, South Devon and Chudleigh have been involved in their own battle.

Chudleigh slipped back when they lost to Dartington last Saturday and, while 13 points may not look much to make up, it is at this time of the season.

"If we win we are right back in it – if we lose then we will be playing for third place against Barnstaple and probably Dartington," said Martin. "Had anyone said to me at the start of the season we would finish third, I'd have settled for that.

"Over the season I think we have shown ourselves to be better than that, but we have to show it against South Devon if we want to go up."

South Devon skipper Dave Knowles is confident they can win at Chudleigh, but is taking nothing for granted.

"It is a big game and we are looking for a positive result, which we are capable of if we do our basics right," he said. "It would be good if we could get Tertius Gouws out early as he has been a dangerman for them all season."

Former Chudleigh captain Mark Halse is back from holiday to play for his present club against his old one. Brother Nick has a late fitness check on a shoulder injury.

Chudleigh have doubts over the fitness of opener Lance Ames (leg), but will have Mark Solway back on duty.

Chagford skipper Del Lammonby is being realistic about his side's prospects ahead of the game away to leaders Plymstock.

Lammonby's men are 19 points adrift of safety down in the basement – and need to start winning some matches soon to dodge the drop.

Plymstock aren't invincible – three defeats in 13 starts is a decent record but not outstanding – and Lammonby would like to turn them over. However, there are other more important games coming up as far as the Chagford skipper is concerned.

"Three of our last four games are Axminster, Thorverton and Clyst St George, who are all around us in the league," said Lammonby. "I would love to go to Plymstock and win, but the important thing is to get as many points as we can.

"How we do against the other three sides is going to be more important to our chances of staying up."

With Gary Sizmur, Arnie and Billy Searle and Dave and Paul Penberthy all playing tomorrow, Lammonby has a few more bowling options open.

Elsewhere in the B Division, lowly Clyst St George travel to Dartington and Axminster are at home to Tavistock.

PLYMSTOCK overseas star Jesse Contessa has gone home for major surgery after a horror accident during a cup match.

Contessa will have reconstructive surgery on a knee injury in Melbourne and will not be back for the rest of the season.

Team-mates said Contessa hurt himself during a Corinthian Cup match.

Plymstock eventually won the competition last Sunday, but batsman and club spokesman George Barnicott said that was little consolation.

He said: "We'll all miss Jesse, as he's been great to have around the club.

"He's come over and settled in like a piece of the furniture.

"We all wish him a swift recovery from his horrible injury and hope to see him again soon."

B Division leaders Plymstock are looking to put some more distance between themselves and the chasing pack.

They face second-bottom Chagford at Dean Cross tomorrow (2pm), but captain Dave Orchard knows better than to take the visitors lightly.

He said: "Although Chagford are struggling, they do have a number of danger men in their squad.

"If they put out their strongest team we'll have to be on top of our game to get a result."
