NOTHING short of perfection will do for Chudleigh skipper Jon Martin on the last lap to promotion.

Barton – at home to Dartington & Totnes – appear to be nailed on for top spot but it’s wide open between Hatherleigh (191pts), Chudleigh (186), Lewdown (181 and even Barnstaple & Pilton at a push (171) chasing runners-up.

There is no room for errors, as Martin knows, starting with the home game against Thorverton tomorrow.

“If we want to go upwe need to win all three of our remaining games to keep the pressure on the top two,” said Martin.

“Ben Holmes and Matt Heather come in for Matt Hookway and Matt Dowrick.

Chudleigh have to get past Hatherleigh, whose skipper Mark Lake isn’t feeling charitable.

“We have been up there all season so our aim is very much to gain promotion,” said Lake.

“I think Barton will be tough to catch in first but second spot is very much ours if we want it.”

Hathereleigh will be unchanged against Alphington tomorrow.

Being unchanged is a state Alphington can only dream of!

Vice-captain Stuart Shaw said the Alphas inconsistency of selection is why they are four off the bottom of the table.

“In all our league games this season we have only put together the same side twice,” said Shaw.

“We have used more than 30 different players in the first team due to unavailability.

“This is no- ones fault just one of those seasons. But I do know if we could of put out our strongest team for at least nine games this season we would be sitting in the top two now, not the bottom four.

“Win at least two out the three games we have left and finish as high as possible, that’s our target.

“We are in the final of the Corinthian Cup this Sunday it would be great for the club to bring it back with us.”

While the playing side has been a bit hit and miss, off the field new chairman Steve Baxter has earned high praise.

“We are very lucky at Alphington to have one of the best chairmen I have ever worked with,” said Shaw.

“In the small amount of time he has been in post, thanks to all his hard work he has put in there will be a very bright future for Alphington CC.

“I know every one at the club would like to thank Steve for all his hard work he has put in so far.”

Barton should pick up another win towards their goal of promotion when doomed Dartington & Totnes pay a visit – weather permitting!

Chudleigh and Lewdown – at home to B&P – have to lose heavily for Barton to go up this weekend, so the message from skipper Adam Parker remains take it game at a time until the maths are undisputable.

“Obviously are aim is to stay at top, said Parker. “This weekend we will be looking to widen the gap further from the chasing pack.

“Last three games now so we will be looking for three strong performances and three positive results.”

Axminster are away to Tavistock.
