BARTON are B Division champions almost irrespective of what happens in their game at Barnstaple.
The real drama is in the squabble for second place between Hatherleigh and Chudleigh.
Hatherleigh’s win over Tavistock last Saturday in the only game in the top five divisions played to a finish, put them 16 points ahead of Chudleigh with a game to go.
Who do Chudleigh play in their last game? Hatherleigh at Kate Brook.
While the odds seem to favour Hatherleigh, stranger things have been known on the last day of the season than a win over the odds to steal promotion.
Hatherleigh captain Mark Lake is supremely confident going into the promotion decider.
“We are going to have to play some really poor cricket not to gain promotion,” said Lake.
“There is a slim chance of finishing top so we will be going out to get as many points as we can, but are very aware cricket is a funny game and we will be taking nothing for granted.”
Chudleigh captain Jon Martin remains combative to the end.
“It's going to be a big ask, but mathematically it is still possible and we will keep fighting until it's not,” said Martin.
Alphington have nothing to play for at Lewdown as the relegation question was settled some time ago. Axminster and Dartington are the teams bowing out.
Thorverton are going nowhere in the B Division this season.
Too many rain-offs – the home game against Barnstaple last Saturday was the seventh so far –have cost Thors any chance of going up.
The season concludes at Tavistock.
