THORVERTON, who pay a first league visit to Barton this Saturday, didn’t get far after tea in their game against visiting Hatherleigh.
After Ali Fury and Paul Fielder fell early in a running total of 12 for two, Andrew Codling (49) and James Hope (34) pushed the score up to 96 for three.
Although Rob Cockwill bowled well to take five Thors’ wickets for 33 runs, the home side got to 175 for nine before time expired. Nick Barton made 23.
Hatherleigh batted eight over to reach 29 for none when rain stopped play
BARTON will be disappointed their game at Tavistock didn’t go the distance as the Moorlanders are propping up the table with just one win so far.
Tavistock recovered from a middle-order collapse which saw them slump from 83 for two to 87 for six to make 212 for nine.
The Barton bowlers who did the damage were Stuart Bowker with four for 36 and skipper Adam Parker with three for 34.
Tavvy’s recovery was led by Jamie Stephens, who hit an unbeaten 62. His stand of 76 with John McGahey did a lot to stave off total collapse.
Barton were 18 without loss when it rained. They will be hoping for better luck when Thorverton visit this Saturday.
CHUDLEIGH skipper Jon Martin will want to see an improvement from his side when they head across Dartmoor to Tavistock this Saturday.
For Chudleight were heading for a third straight loss against Lewdown last time out before they were rescued by the rain.
Lewdown are sometimes viewed as a one-man team – that man being South African all-rounder Rob Mutch – so Chudleigh were jubilant when Rob Clarke got him out for nothing.
However, stand of 130 for the third wicket between Dave Ball (67) and Mark Jordan (67) plus chip-ins from Harry Gearing (23) and Kris Harris (29) got the Moorlanders up to 228 for nine.
Pick of the Chudleigh bowlers with four for 68 was Matt Heather.
Mark Solway made 23 as Chudleigh advanced to 55 for two in reply. Then Mutch (3-24) and Harris (3-5) got among them.
Sixty for 60 was a sorry story and when the rain came Chudleigh were 64 for six.
“I don’t think we were going to win it from there,” said skipper Martin.
BARNSTAPLE & Pilton took the best of the points from a game which was slipping away from them when it started to rain.
B&P made a respectable 226 for eight with Steve Moore (38), Danny Donovan (33) and George McEndoo (30) all contributing.
Alex Wraight (4-44) pipped Matt Pyle for the bowling laurels.
Axminster were handily placed at 99 for two – Paul Miller 37 not out – with 19 overs to come when the match was abandoned.
Barnstaple, who took 12 points to Axminster’s ten. are away to Alphington this Saturday.
ALPHINGTON were well on the comeback trail when their game at Dartington & Totnes met a sad and soggy end.
Former Torquay and Barton batter Ian Bransdon had fired 70 for D&T in a stand of 42 with Ryan Stevenson (28) as D&T totalled 179 for eight.
Lee Rowe had three for 27 for the Alphas while there were two wickets each for spinners Stuart Shaw and Paul James.
Alphington were in early trouble at three for two, but got going again through Nick Ainscough (29) and Ben Morris (43no) to reach 81 for three when the terminal downpour blew in.
