Devon trail by 187 at tea on last day

IT’S been slow going between lunch and tea on the third and final day of Devon’s game against Berkshire at Finchampstead.

At tea, taken after 75 overs today and 143 overall, Berkshire were 354 for six and 187 runs ahead. The not out batsmen were Chris Peploe (29) and Ian Sturmer (1).

Berkshire, 166 for one overnight from 69 overs, were 281 for three when the bails were taken off at lunch.

David Barnes, 84 not out overnight, went on to reach his century and was still there on 143 not out at the break.

Matt Jones, on 19 when play resumed, advanced his score to 71 before he was dismissed.

The partnership stood at 140 and had spanned 50 overs when Jones hesitated going forward to Charlie Morris snicked a catch to keeper Thompson.

Next to go was James Morris, who was out in the penultimate over of the session.

Morris survived a confident shout for lbw, but was gone next ball when Devon skipper Chris Bradley flattened his off-stump.

Steve Naylor was the other not out batsman at the break.

Berkshire crawled on after lunch to 292 when Barnes was given out lbw to Trevor Anning for 146.

Euan Brock scratched around to make 13 before a ball at driving length from Bougourd tempted him and he found Peter Bradley at wide-mid-off.

Naylor, always a tough nut to crack, took few chances reaching 23. He got out to a tumbling catch at mid-on by Chris Bradley.
