Light problems end Devon stalemate early

DEVON’S game against Berkshire at Finchampstead was abandoned due to light problems with an hour to go.

Berksihre were 411 for seven at the time – 244 runs ahead – and with 17 overs to go there was no chance of Devon mounting any sort of chase.

David Barnes, 84 not out overnight, went on to reach his century and was still there on 143 not out at lunch.

Matt Jones, on 19 when play resumed, advanced his score to 71 before he was dismissed.

The partnership stood at 140 and had spanned 50 overs when Jones hesitated going forward to Charlie Morris snicked a catch to keeper Thompson.

Next to go was James Morris, who was out in the penultimate over of the session.

Morris survived a confident shout for lbw, but was gone next ball when Devon skipper Chris Bradley flattened his off-stump.

Berkshire crawled on after lunch to 292 when Barnes was given out lbw to Trevor Anning for 146.

Euan Brock scratched around to make 13 before a ball at driving length from Bougourd tempted him and he found Peter Bradley at wide-mid-off.

Steve Naylor, always a tough nut to crack, took few chances reaching 23 off 109 b alls. He got out to a tumbling catch at mid-on by Chris Bradley.

Chris Peploe played a few shots on his way to 60 and took 22 in one over from Peter Bradley to bring up his 50.

A superb catch at full stretch by David Lye sent Peploe back with the score on 393 for seven.

With the last hour approaching, umpires Steve Bishopp and John Attridge called the captains together due to concerns about reflected glare from outbuildings and static machinery at one end of the ground.

After a brief discussion the game was called off as a draw.

Berkshire 187 (C T Peploe 50; C Bradley 4-59) & 411-7(D E Barnes 146, C T Peoloe 60, B H D Mordt 51; R J Bougourd 3-86), Devon 354-5 (J E Burke 144, J J Bess 115). Devon (12pts) drew with Berkshire (7).
