Roach nails first ton in Bideford derby win

JOSH Roach nailed his first league ton for Bideford in a 61-run win over Barnstaple & Pilton that moved them within five points of second-placed Thorverton.

Aussie opener Roach helped himself to 103 off 113 balls with 11 fours and a six.

Roach was fourth out on 189 having shared stands of 75 with skipper James Ford, 59 with Matt Allin (34) and 43 with Chris Luxton.

Josh King came on with four overs to go and flogged 50 not out off 23 balls – six fours and three sixes in that little lot – towards a final total of 240 for four.

Steve Moore’s two for 27 off nine was as good as it got for B&P.

Barnstaple went off in hot pursuit with Andy Barton (38)  Jack Popham (35) getting up to 87 for one in 14 overs.

Three wickets fell to King and Josh Atkinson and from then on Bideford worked through the B&P order.

Moore (14), James Thomas (11) and Sean Cole (21) all delayed the inevitable, but it was King’s day and he went on to finish with four for 33 as B&P were dispatched for 179 with five overs to go.

It’s Braunton at home this Saturday for Bideford and skiper James Ford is looking for a derby double.

He added: “Josh roach is starting to look at home on better wickets – his hundred was chanceless.

“Good to see Matt Allin back and getting runs.

“Barnstaple had us worried at 90 for two, but once again our bowlers stepped up.”
