Work about to start on Bovey pavilion project

PHASE one of Bovey Tracey’s £250,000 pavilion renovation scheme is due to start on Monday.

Bovey’s picturesque pavilion was originally built between 1850-1860 by workers from the town’s pottery industry who had set up the club.

Over the last 150 years the pavilion has been added to and updated numerous times. Now it needs a complete modernisation to bring it into the 21st Century.

The work in two phases is due to take three years to complete. Phase one should be ready in March next year, ready for the 2015 season.

Money to meet the costs has come from a variety of  sources, ranging from personal donations and charitable trusts to waste management firm Viridor through the landfill tax credits scheme.

Geoff Coish, the Bovey Tracey official project managing the scheme, said the community support had overwhelmed him.

“We were approached out of the blue by local charities keen to support us – and they are sizeable sums too,” said Coish.

“All they have asked is we keep their identities confidential.

“We held an open day at the club during the season which attracted a lot of support too. One elderly gentleman who has followed the club all his life handed me a cheque for £200 on the spot.”

Phase one of the work is the element most visitors to the club will benefit from.

For six months of the year the pavilion is unused and that is something the club wants to change.

We believe it is important to make our pavilion available to the community during the winter months,” said Coish.

“To that end we will be installing an under-floor heating system operated entirely in conjunction with our solar panel installation.

“A suspended ceiling is also planned to reduce our energy costs.

“As stated, the vast majority of the works are internal and briefly comprise the refurbishment and expansion of the kitchen.

“Improved facilities will then be more appropriate to deal with the extensive catering we carry out. in particular for the matches and our many social events.”

A new changing room for umpires is blueprinted for a new upper level in the pavilion, which requires major chances to the staircase and the existing players’ balcony.

The front elevation of the pavilion will incorporate a state-of-the-art electronic scoreboard.

To enable access to the pavilion during the winter periods a new asphalt path will be laid.

Other features, such as improved disabled access, seating and planters, are also part of the scheme.

Phase two – on the stocks for this time next year with a March 2016 completion target – involves upgrading changing rooms, showers, toilets and machine stores.

Advance survey work has revealed extensive work is needed to rebuild the rear wall of the pavilion and the changing room roof.

“Our project team is already under way preparing drawings for this phase, as they will require planning approval,” said Coish.
