Ward installed as new Brixham skipper

BRIXHAM have asked keeper-batter Richard Ward to take over as captain following the departure of Mark Orchard to Exmouth.

Orchard, who was captain last season, is now playing for the Premier side hoping to further his Devon ambitions.

Devon picked Orchard for their final three-day game last season and he took six wickets on his debut.

Ward inherits a side which pressed for promotion from the A Division last year, although there are a number of changes which will mean that a youngish side may be even younger this season.

Kyle Schreuder, prolific batsman and spin bowler from South Africa, has been lined up as Brixham’s overseas player this year.

Brixham have high hopes of a crop of young players who have won the South Devon League U17 title for the past two years.

Players have been in the nets for the past two weeks in preparation for a season. Training nights continue through the season on Tuesday and Friday evenings for the 1st XI and U19s squad.

Brixham run youth teams, at U11, U13s and U15s level. For the first time this year the club are fielding an U13 girls’ team.

Colts training is under the supervision of Andy Pugh, the former Devon and England Board XI batsman, who passed his level two coaching award last winter.

Phil Gregory the club secretary, anticipates a successful season on the youth front.

“We have a couple of very strong youth team squads we think will do well this year,” said Gregory.

“Our venture into girls’ cricket has met with a positive response but we will also welcome new boys and girls at the club.”

Membership enquires should be directed to Gregory at 07577 277576.
