BRIXHAM have signed Kiwi all-rounder Matt Stringfellow for their assualt on the A Division this season.
Stringfellow is 19 and harbours ambitions to play State cricket in the not too distant future.
He’s a right handed top order batsman and off-spin bowler who has already represented the senior Wairarapa Bush provisional side in the Hawke Cup.
Stringellow’s figures were three for 90 off 39 overs, not bad against four full-timers and Kiwi Test star B J Watling, who made 170!
He made his debut for Wairarapa Bush in 2009, whilst still in college, having previously represented Central Districts through the age groups.
In his maiden Hawke Cup season Matt was voted the most promising player in the Minor Association, averaging 32.3 with the bat.
In his final year at college (2010) he produced a magnificent season tally of 1,289 runs (average 56.0) along with 25 wickets at 18.4.
Stringfellow (pictured) played for Lechlade in the West of England Premier League (Wiltshire Division) last season, slamming four centuries en-route to a chart topping 766 runs at an average of 51.3 and taking 28 wickets at 20 runs apiece.
On his return to New Zealand he hit 144 for his club side Lansdowne in the Wairarapa Premier Men’s Competition.
Cricket manager Andy Jago said Stringfellow may be the missing piece of the jigsaw Brixham need to construct a promotion-wining side.
“Brixham desperately need a quality spinner capable of containing sides and bowling sides out,” said Jago.
“Matt sounds the ideal bowler to compliment the seam attack of Mark Orchard, Mark Gilmour, Craig Eaves and Lee Upham.
“Having a cricketer of his pedigree batting at the top of the order already makes the team look a more balanced than last season.
“Providing we can get a good start in May, it looks as though Brixham could be pushing once again at the top end of the league table."
