Barton end 35-year wait for Brockman Cup win

SEAN Adderley hit a match-winning 50 as Barton II defeated Lustleigh by seven wickets to claim the Brockman Cup for the first time in 35 years.
Barton appeared to do the hard bit by holding Lustleigh to 114 for nine – Steve Wright making a top score of 24.
Appearances were not deceptive as Barton cruised home with more than three overs to go.
Adderley (pictured, left) was named man of the match by adjudicator Paul Harding, the former Torquay and Devon off-spin bowler for a cracking innings.
However, there was competition for the handsome Bill Stanbury Trophy that goes with the prize from Barton bowlers Stuart Bowker and Pete Gartrell.
Skipper Gartrell bagged four wickets for 18 runs, but was upstaged by left-arm spinner Bowker with four for 15.
Indeed, Lustleigh were going along nicely at Torquay Recreation Ground until Bowker was brought into the attack.
Steve Wright and nephew Jon had put on exactly 50 for the second wicket, taking Lustleigh to 65 for two.
A brisk going over from Bowker and Gartrell reduced them to 78 for six, from when it became a struggle for runs.
Bowker had Jon Wright brilliantly caught by a diving Tom Drake at mid-on, then induced Steve Wright to find Jimmy Hamilton out on patrol on the deep square-leg boundary,
Two bowleds in successive balls – Nigel Sawrey-Cookson and Duncan Manners-Chapman to a delivery which turned sharply and clipped the off-stump – had Lustleigh rocking.
Mike Wright batted through to the end for 21 when he became the third of Gartrelll’s scalps.
Barton got to 26 without loss when opener Matt McCann was bowled by Mike Sessions, then Adderley and brother Dale (16) pushed the score along to 54.
Dale Adderley was run-out following a mix-up with Sean, which brought Drake in to bat.
Drake and Adderley clocked up 58 to leave three to win when Adderley got out to Sam Bannister for exactly 50.
Tony Bowker lunged hopefully at a couple of balls before Drake (24no) wrapped it up.
