HOLDERS Barton will start their defence of the Brockman Cup this year with a trip to South Devon.Barton – who ended a 35-year wait for Brockman success by beating Lustleigh in last season’s final – will visit Marsh Road on Tuesday, May 21.
Lustleigh, the team Barton defeated to win the cup, are the one team with a bye in the first round.
Lustleigh will be away to either Dartington & Totnes or Babbacombe in the second round.
Stoke Gabriel, winners in 2011, face a toughie against Brixham, the side they beat in the semi-final en-route to their last win.
South Devon’s oldest cup competition celebrates its 80th birthday this year. Two clubs survive from 1933: Babbacombe and Torquay.
Teams have come and gone – first winners Old Mannorians are no longer around – but some things never change.
As always the final will be played at Torquay Recreation Ground on the first Friday in July.
The only rule change this season is an increase in umpires’ fees from £10 to £12.
Dave Traylor has retired as competition president and been replaced by Babbacombe stalwart Max Sandford.
Sandford was Brockman Cup chairman until 2011, when he stood down and was replaced by Tim Chapman.
