Budleigh up to fourth after win over Chudleigh

BUDLEIGH Salterton can gain some serious ground on the leading group of clubs if they beat leaders Plympton on Saturday.

The Otters; have snapped out of their mid-season slump with back-to-back wins over Lewdown and Chudleigh.

Budleigh are up to fourth now – 12 points behind Paignton in second place and 33 adrift of Plympton.

Plympton will be a tougher test than two bottom-three sides, but you can only beat what’s in front of you and Budleigh made a decent job of it against bottom side Chudleigh.

Chudleigh’s early-order batsmen couldn’t score regularly against Ben Phillips (2-20) or Luke Peterson (2-15) – and the middle order perished trying to get moving against Joel Murphy (3-19) and James Leat (2-15).

Skipper Ed Foreman made 25 and Sean Newland 21, but only Rob Clarke (18) offered much resistance after they went.

Budleigh didn’t take any risks chasing and were 66 without loss before losing a wicket – Elliot Rice (32) the man out.

Harry Parkin batted through to the finish for an unbeaten 54 as Budleigh completed a seven-wicket win with more than seven overs to spare.

While Budleigh can think about going back up, Chudleigh;’s hopes of avoiding an immediate return to the B Division are diminishing.

They are 37 points adrift at the bottom with Barton to play this Saturday.

Skipper Foreman isn’t mentioning relegation yet as he is still trying to win matches.

“We have Barton next and then Paignton and it would be nice to get something out of one of those matches before going into a run of fixtures against the teams around us,” said Foreman.

On losing to Budleigh, he added: “We came up against a very good bowling unit and they made it very difficult for us to score runs on a good wicket.

“We lost early wickets which meant we could not capitalise when Phillips and Paterson had finished their spells.”
