Tributes paid to former Barton captain

TRIBUTES have been paid by friend a foe alike to former Barton cricket captain Peter Cassells, who has died aged 70.

Cassells, a good enough soccer player to turn out for Torquay United A in his youth, took up cricket at Newton Abbot Grammar School and featured in Barton’s 1st for more than 20 years.

He captained the side in the 60s and 70s, laying the foundations for Barton’s dominant team of the 1980s,which swept almost all before them in the Devon League. He is pictured right as the winning captain after the 1969 Narracott Cup final.

Jim Parker,who followed Cassells as captain at Cricketfield Road, remembered his old mentor with affection.

“I looked up to ‘Cass’ from a very early age and had the utmost respect for him, both as a team-mate and mate.

“We became close friends with him and his family and we had some great times.
